The 16th Festivalito de La Palma kicks off with its highest record of participants

"The response this year has been massive and, of those 300 participants, 150 are filmmakers, so we anticipate the shooting of 150 short films, a figure that we have never reached before," explained filmmaker José Víctor Fuentes, founder and director of the Festivalito.

The opening gala kicks off tomorrow afternoon in Plaza Francisca de Gazmira, in the municipality of El Paso, where this year's motto of the La Palma Rueda filming contest will be discovered. The event will feature performances by Tihuya Cats, the Wind Quintet of the Municipal School of El Paso, Arístides Moreno, the Dj's Pimienta Selectoras and the comedians Aarón Gómez and Víctor Hubara. In addition, the gala will also host the screening of several short films and will pay tribute to La Palma artist Petite Lorena.

In parallel to the recording of short films La Palma Rueda, which will turn La Palma into a natural set, the Festivalito will screen more than 30 shorts and 15 feature films. The schedules and the projection rooms can be consulted on the Festival website.

'Festivalito Lab'

The great novelty this year is the Festivalito Lab, a parallel program of presentations, workshops and informative sessions that will be held on May 15 and 16 at the Monterrey Theater in El Paso, aimed at fostering the meeting between emerging filmmakers and producers and promote the Canarian audiovisual sector.

For Fuentes, “the training and the presentation sessions is the third leg that we lacked in the Festivalito. It is about acting as catalysts for synergies, making the industry in the Canary Islands advance and also offering training to the younger generations so that they can come into contact with the audiovisual world as soon as possible. Having a first contact through the workshops that we have prepared for young people can be the beginning of a beautiful relationship with the cinema ”.

However, the closing ceremony will be held on Saturday May 22, at 7:00 p.m., in the Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane, with the actor Luifer Rodríguez and the comedian Kike Pérez as presenters. In addition, the finalist shorts of La Palma Rueda will be screened and prizes will be awarded to the winners of the night.
