Teddy Bautista remains outside the board of directors of the SGAE | Culture

Teddy Bautista, this Thursday, at his home in Boadilla del Monte.

Neither the betting houses would dare to make predictions about the SGAE. When Eduardo Teddy Baptist went yesterday to vote In the elections for the board of directors, he discouraged making pools: after 34 years in the entity, the former president knows that it is a box always full of surprises. And the elections, whose results were known this morning, just gave him a capital letter: the favorite Baptist it remains outside the board of directors and, therefore, also of the presidency. To the ambitions of the ex-leader, who ruled a golden age of the SGAE, until in 2011 he was detained by the Civil Guard for an alleged misappropriation for which he will be tried soon -the date is still unknown-, he missed one step: it was the ninth most voted among the composers of musical works, a category from which only eight are elected. Among the creators who will be in the new government of the SGAE, include Fermín Cabal, Hevia, Josemi Carmona, Pilar Jurado, Antonio Onetti or Yolanda García Serrano, flaming winner of the National Prize for Dramatic Literature.

"I wanted to be part of the solution. Although now I feel relief and I'm glad I'm not part of the problem. That board is again fragmented. All the effort to find the dialogue is going to be epic ", declares Bautista to EL PAÍS. "Almost impossible", is defined by one of the 35 elected, who foresees the umpteenth government faced, where the key weight of the wheel is maintained, a presumed fraud between partners and television networks to enter millions thanks to the music issued at dawn , which investigates justice and corrodes the entity for years. In his interpretation, almost all the musicians of the new board are related to the wheel and Nuria Rodríguez Fernández, which the judge considers one of the leaders of the plot. Another elected is more optimistic: "A board almost completely renovated is a good opportunity to regain social peace."

So complex is the SGAE that there is a group that withdrew from the elections and now could boast of having won them. 29 candidates abandoned the elections for protest against the absence of electronic voting, led by musicians such as Kiko Veneno, Álvaro Urquijo or Jota de Los Planetas. They encouraged the other partners not to participate in elections they do not recognize, they sought the support of authors such as Love of Lesbian, Iván Ferreiro or Vanesa Martín, and they seem to have achieved their goal: yesterday, only 1,373 of the 18,970 eligible voters voted. A rickety 7.25% influx, even less than the 2.582 members, 11.85%, of the previous elections, in 2015.

One of the most seasoned retired, Patacho Recio, explained to this newspaper that they plan to begin the procedures to also take their repertoire of the SGAE and that they will only go back in two cases: an intervention of the Ministry of Culture or a new electoral convocation, with vote electronic. In general, there are many partners who have given their own ultimatum to the SGAE: or the problems are fixed or it will be time to leave.

Thus, the agenda of the new board of directors is already overflowing before it begins. First of all, the 35 elected - they are usually 39 but the withdrawal left only four candidates for eight seats among the editors - will have to appoint a president as soon as possible. Excluded Baptist, the name of Hevia sounds strong but prudence imposes itself above risky prophecies. After that, in any case, the government of the SGAE must turn to work: it is necessary to recompose an entity on the verge of implosion.

And in a hurry. The board will have to draw up new statutes in a few weeks, in accordance with European directives, and submit them to the vote of the partners in an Extraordinary Assembly, together with the accounts and the management of the entity in 2017, already rejected in June. All this, before 2019. At the same time, on the SGAE hangs the sword of Damocles of the warning of Culture: gave until September 27 to fix its statutes, electronic voting and its distribution system. Although the entity appealed the decision before the National Court, who finally settle the mess.

Culture wants to see a firm intention on the part of the SGAE to face the wheel. But several of the new directors, such as Hevia, Pablo Pinilla, Carmona or Juan Antonio Ipiña García (Tontxu), have repeatedly defended the musicians who play in the evening programs and played down the scandal. In short, uncertainty reigns. Dialogue and willingness to negotiate will be necessary. Just what is missing in the SGAE.
