Suárez saves Atlético ‘in extremis’ against Alavés

The Uruguayan Luis Suarez reappeared and saved the Atlético de Madrid by scoring the winning goal in the 90th minute (1-2) before him Deportivo Alavéswho managed to equalize the score with ten players after the expulsion of Víctor Laguardia.

Marcos Llorente advanced to the colchoneros in the 41st minute in an isolated play and when the game was better for those of Diego Simeone In the second half. When the Basques were left with one less player, the entry of Joselu Mato and Lucas Pérez ended with an own goal from Felipe Augusto who equalized the game with very little to go. There the Uruguayan striker of the Madrid team appeared, to give Atlético de Madrid three gold points in the 90th minute, which kept him at the head of the classification.

The Alavesistas, for their part, failed to start the year of their centenary with victory in a duel in which they barely finished on goal and were left with 18 points, close to the relegation places.

Alavés gave space and the ball to Atlético de Madrid from the start, but the colchoneros had a hard time opening a gap in a defense with the lines close together. Only Yannick Carrasco had the only clear chance in the opening bars, but Fernando Pacheco caught without problems.

With many Albiazules footballers in the center of the field after an “eleven” revolutionized by Pablo Machín, the Madrilenians were looking for changes of the game and the bands, but their attempts were very imprecise. In fact, Diego Pablo Simeone’s men were not comfortable without being able to play as direct as they are used to.

The left wing was the rojiblancos’ best ally, who had no work behind them, as Alavés could not advance many meters when they recovered the ball.

The first long attack of the Vitoria team came after the first half hour of play, although without generating danger against an Atlético who did not want to have any excess of confidence.

In one of the few fast arrivals of Atlético de Madrid, After an error by the locals, the first goal came in the 41st minute. Marcos Llorente accompanied Luis Suárez and, after passing him, controlled, advanced and shot a ball from outside the area that bounced off Víctor Laguardia and prevented the goal from Alava.

Atlético forgave after the resumption, a period in which they could sentence before the expulsion of Laguardia but Luis Suárez, finally savior, and Carrasco, failed twice.

One of the key plays of the match took place in minute 63, when after consulting the VAR, the referee made the decision to expelling Víctor Laguardia with a direct red card after a foul on Lemar.

The game was uphill for Alavés, but Luis Suárez forgave in the 70th minute by crossing too much a filtered pass from Yannick Carrasco, who completed a great game, and the Uruguayan gave life to the Vitoria team.

The numerical advantage gave more facilities to the “Cholo” Simeone, who waited for their opportunity, like the one Lemar had with a direct free kick that the local goalkeeper guessed.

Alavés had the tie in the only shot they achieved. Florian Lejeune clearly headed a free kick, but the ball crashed into the post’s strain and after hitting the rojiblanco goalkeeper it went over the end line.

The entrance of Joselu Mato and Lucas Pérez gave another face to the locals and a combination between the two ended with an own goal from Felipe Augusto, impossible for the Slovenian goalkeeper.

But Luis Suárez reappeared and saved Atlético de Madrid in the final stretch after finishing a great pass from Joao Félix (minute 90). The goal places Atlético as a solid leader with 38 points, two more than the Real Madrid, who has played two more games than the rojiblancos.
