Spotify, Tinder and European newspapers unite against Apple’s 30% rate

A number of application developers, including Spotify, the parent company of Tinder, Epic Games or the lobby of the European newspaper publishers have formed a coalition to face the 30% commission charged Manzanain the transactions that are carried out within the ‘apps’ downloaded from your store.

The Coalition for App Justice (CAF, for its acronym in English) has among its objectives to defend that the platforms carry out the necessary reforms to “preserve” consumer choice and ensure a “level playing field” for developers of applications and video games that “depend” on the “most popular” application stores and platforms.

CAF’s founding members include Basecamp, Blix, Blockchain.com, Deezer, Epic Games, Match Group (parent of Tinder), Prepear, Protonmail, Skydemon, Spotify, and Tile.

The European lobby of newspaper publishers News Media Europe, among whose members is the Information Media Association (AMI), which in Spain brings together most of the major media.

On the other hand, the European Board of Editors (EPC), a body that brings together the presidents and CEOs of European media groups. Among its members are the CEO of Grupo Prisa, Manuel Mirat; the CEO of Vocento, Luis Enríquez Nistal; and the president of Prensa Ibérica, Javier Moll.

Although the coalition defends its principles with respect to all platforms, in the statement in which they have announced their creation they only mention Apple and its application store, the App Store.

The members of the CAF have assured that the practices of the company led by Tim Cook have caused “frustrations” for your “excessive” commissions and by rules that give the company an “unfair advantage” and “block out innovative competitors” in recent years. “Developers and users are asking Apple to be better,” said the coalition.
