The Sporting de Gijón, the only Second Division team that is still alive in the Copa del Rey, defeated on Tuesday Valencia (2-1) in the first leg of the knockout round of the 'K.O.' thanks to an English goal Nick Blackman ten minutes to the end of the crash.
El Molinón hosted a duel where the pupils of Marcelino García Toral deserved better luck after forgiving a good list of occasions. The first of them to the first minute of play in boots Batshuayi. The Belgian striker did not succeed inexplicably. There, the team from the capital of Turia began to complicate their lives.
Carlos Soler had the second chance of the 'che' with a side shot that was poisoned before reaching goal, but – curiously – the first goal of the game did not bear the signature of Valencia, but of a Sporting that had held crouched and ended up finding a prize bigger than its merits.
The center of André Sousa was finished off by Noblejas. Valencia wanted to wake up before the break with the young Korean Kang-in Lee -titular on Tuesday- but the goal came in Parejo boots. The one of Coslado threw to door and its firing hit in the crosspiece, exceeded the goal line and the leather spit out into the heart of the area. The referee consulted the VAR and confirmed the goal of the Valencian captain.
In the second half, and despite the eagerness of the team of Marcelino, who returned without luck to what was his home, there was only one goal, which marked Blackman when he ran the 80th minute with an exceptional header. Before, Gameiro missed Chilena and Jaume had to pull out with a tight corner that was close to being Olympic.
However, the set did not change for Valencia, who will be forced to come back at the Mestalla next week. The Asturians, for their part, want keep claiming the spotlights in Copa after their irregular streak in the league, where they occupy the eleventh position and are almost ten points behind promotion posts.
