Spanish culture surrenders to flamenco, a “global art”, on its world day

The Prado Museum and the National Association of Flamenco Tablaos of Spain came together this Tuesday to celebrate the International Day of Flemish with an institutional act held in the Corral de la Morería, in which great stars of flamenco and Spanish dance have put his art at the service of the great masters of the painting.

The doors of the Prado Museum open as a metaphor for those of tablaos, museums, theaters, opera, those of culture, in short. Juan Manuel del Rey, director of the Corral de la Morería, explained to EFE that with this celebration they intend to show the importance of flamenco in Spanish culture and in the world. “Flamenco is a art global“said Del Rey, who highlighted the importance of tablaos for flamenco and its subsistence.

He also reviewed the support that the sector has had -one of the most punished by pandemic– by public opinion and institutions, but he assured that they need more support from the administration to guarantee their survival and, therefore, “the survival of flamenco. Flamenco is a hallmark of our country.”

President of the National Association of Flamenco Tablaos of Spain, Del Rey added that after the pandemic forty percent of the tablaos have disappeared and “the rest are in an extreme situation”, and he recalled that tablaos employ 95 percent of flamenco artists.

The Fortea Dance Center in collaboration with the Madrid Flamenco Theater has held another of the events that commemorate this day on which ‘Flamenco, yesterday, today and always‘, a film in which a double tribute is made: to flamenco, to its essence that “has evolved but remains over the years”, and to cinema and photography, arts that preserve that essence, explained Virginia Domínguez. from the center.

Cinema and photography have picked up this evolution and they have allowed us to see how flamenco was analyzed at the end of the 19th century, what our artists’ wardrobe was like in the 20s or in which stages flamenco was lived in the 70s “.

The Teatro Real announced this Tuesday that, for the first time, the Training Program will have a course dedicated to this art, under the title ‘Flamenco: an approach to its history and styles’, in which the cantaora Rocío Márquez will share basic notions about this artistic expression. The four sessions that make up this course will take place on December 18 and 19.

On the other hand, the María Pagés Choreographic Center takes up the III International Choreographic Encounters of Fuenlabrada under the heading ‘Choreography of female creative power. Urgency to act ‘, with the aim of promoting encounter, dialogue and reflection between flamenco creators. Àngels Margerit, María Pagés, Rocío Molina, Marta Carrasco, Carmen Werner, Rafaela Carrasco and Carmen Cortés will participate, a meeting that aims to promote the empowerment of creative women as artists and businesswomen, promote their presence in positions of cultural responsibility and policy and promote their participation in juries and evaluation bodies.
