Residents in Spain They have made 197.3 million trips in 2018, 1.9% more than in 2017, and they spent almost 47,082 million euros, 6.4% higher than the previous year, according to the Resident Tourism Survey (ETR / Familitur) prepared by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

90.2% of trips made by Spaniards last year had as a main destination Spain, compared to 9.8% of trips abroad. The trips with internal destination have accumulated 81% of the overnight stays and 65.8% of the total expense, with an average cost of 48 euros. Conversely, trips abroad have accounted for 19% of overnight stays and 34.2% of total spending, with an average daily expenditure of 106 euros.

As a whole, the overnight stays corresponding to the trips made by the Spanish in 2018 have reached 801.6 million, similar figure to 2017. The main reasons to travel were leisure (51%), with an accumulated expense of 60% of the total, and visits to family and friends (35.6%). The average daily cost for leisure trips was 64 euros and the highest average was for business trips (116 euros).

In the fourth quarter of 2018, residents in Spain have made 40.2 million trips, an increase of 0.5% compared to the same period of 2017, with an expense of 9,028 million euros, 5% more. 89.6% of the trips in this period had as main destination the national territory, 0.9% in annual rate. On the other hand, trips abroad, which represent 10.4% of the total, increased by 14.4%.

Expenditure in bars and restaurants

In 62.1% of trips, residents opted for non-market accommodation. These have accumulated 60.7% of overnight stays and they had a daily average cost of 30 euros, while the average expenditure of tourists who stayed in a hotel was 134 euros.

In the internal trips, spending in bars and restaurants represented the highest percentage of total expenditure (26.8%), followed by accommodation (24.5%) and transportation (22.9%). With regard to travel abroad, the most important item was transport (29.2%), followed by lodging expenses (20.3%) and tourist parks (18.8%).

By quarters, the highest average daily expenditure was recorded in the second and fourth quarters for linternal trips (57 euros) and in the second trips abroad (132 euros). On the other hand, the lowest average expenses were in the third quarter (40 euros in internal trips and 90 euros in those made abroad).

Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia, destinations

Andalusia (16.6%), Catalonia (12.8%) and the Valencian Community (9.9%) were the main destinations of travelers, while La Rioja (0.8%), Navarre (1.3%) and the Balearic Islands (1.8%) occupied the last places.

The daily average expenses the highest were in trips to the Balearic Islands (75 euros), the Community of Madrid (74) and the Canary Islands (68). On the other hand, the lowest average values ​​took place in Castilla-La Mancha (35 euros), Castilla y León and Extremadura (37).

Residents in the Community of Madrid were the ones who made the most trips, with 18.1% of the total, followed by residents in Catalonia (17%) and Andalusia (15.3%). The highest average expenses were for residents of the Balearic Islands (73 euros), the Canary Islands (68) and Catalonia (66), while the lowest were among residents of Extremadura (50 euros), Región de Murcia (52) and the Valencian Community (53).
