Spain sees it as "almost mandatory" for the EU to sue the United States. in the WTO for sanctions against Cuba

The Spanish ambassador to Cuba, Juan Fernandez Trigo, considered Wednesday "almost mandatory" that the EU take the US to the World Trade Organization for a provision of the Helms-Burton Act that opens the door to litigation in courts of that country against companies that operate on the island.

"The demand before the WTO would say that it is almost obligatory because we have some conclusions of the European Council of Ministers of 1997 that do not raise it as a possibility but as a requirement that the European Union must take in case the memorandum that was signed is breached "said the diplomat in an interview with Efe.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, announced on Wednesday the activation for the first time in the history of Title III of the Helms-Burton, a measure that will allow to claim before US courts properties expropriated by the Cuban Revolution and by the that the EU already sued the WTO to Washington in 1996, when it was initially approved.
