Spain received 434,362 international tourists in January, 89.5% less than in the same month of 2020, as a result of the third wave of the pandemic, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). With the sharp decline in January, somewhat higher than in December, eleven consecutive months of declines have already been chained in the number of international tourists visiting Spain.

The INE has also reported that the expenditure made by foreign tourists reached 452 million euros in January, a figure 90.5% lower than that of the same month of 2020.The average expenditure per tourist was in the first month of the year. 1,040 euros per year, with an annual decrease of 9.8%, while the average daily expenditure fell by 26.7%, to 106 euros.

Regarding the countries of origin of the visitors, France was the main country of residence in January, with 117,625, which represents 27.1% of the total and a decrease of 75.6% compared to January 2020. Germany and Portugal are the next countries with the most tourists visiting Spain. Germany contributes 51,098 (89.7% less in the annual rate) and Portugal 28,747 tourists (77.9% less).

The Canary Islands were the first main destination for tourists in January, with 19.9% ​​of the total. They are followed by Catalonia (19.6%) and the Valencian Community (11.4%). 86,569 tourists arrive in the Canary Islands, 92.1% less than in January 2020.

The main countries of residence of the tourists of this community are the aggregate of the rest of Europe (with 33.2% of the total) and Germany (21.2%). The number of tourists visiting Catalonia decreased by 90.2% and stood at 85,265. 34.0% comes from France and 22.5% from the rest of Europe aggregate. The third main destination community by number of tourists is the Valencian Community, with 49,727 and an annual decrease of 88.5%.

France is the main country of origin (with 36.5% of the total), followed by Belgium (9.5%). In the rest of the communities, the number of tourists fell by 85.4% in the Balearic Islands, 91.8% in Andalusia and 92.5% in the Community of Madrid.
