April has established itself as the take off of vaccination in Spain having inoculated something more than 8 million doses, the same amount as in the first three months of the campaign. On April 1, 8,342,152 doses had been injected and, according to the report of the Ministry of Health this Friday (with data until Thursday 29), this figure has increased to 16,364,595.
At the end of the month, 11,763,360 people have some inoculated dose (24.8% of the population) and 4,689,766, almost 10%, both, which improves the position of Spain with respect to the European Union.
According to the latest data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), 23.7% of European adults have already received a dose of a vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), while 8 , 7% have received the complete guideline. Spain is among the top 7 countries – a couple of points above the EU average– in terms of inoculation of first doses, although it is behind ten countries in terms of population immunized with the full regimen.
The campaign started with difficulties due to the supply shortage and also by the stop in the administration of the serum of AstraZeneca and the delay in the distribution of Janssen, after knowing the rare thrombi registered in vaccinated people. But the arrival of more remittances in April has been a stress test of the capacity of the National Health System to inoculate prophylaxis, at a rate of between 1.8 and 2 million doses each week, with two record records of daily punctures: 481,910 this Wednesday and 504,823 this Thursday.
In fact, one of the turning points that had been marked since last January by the Ministry of Health and the autonomous communities has been achieved: having more immunized than infected from the beginning of the pandemic. This was achieved on the 20th, when the 3,452,119 immunized exceeded the total number of infected to that date, 3,435,840. The Government foresees that five million Spaniards will be immunized next week.
In this task, and mainly after Easter, large infrastructures, such as stadiums and hospitals, joined the campaign of primary care centers that had been immunizing the elderly.
The main result of this stress test is that the fourth wave has already stabilized, according to the Ministry of Health, which, together with the autonomous communities, had among its main objectives the protection of the group of people over 60 years of age, the fringe of age who has suffered the most from the pandemic: 70% of hospitalizations, 65% of admissions to intensive care and 95% of deaths. Now, they already have at least one dose 8,729,958 of citizens over 60 years of age (72%), of a group of more than 12 million. The vaccination schedule 27.8% of the people in this age group have it complete (3,371,668). The most vulnerable group, those over 80, is already almost completely protected with the full guideline, 88.8%.
The Government’s forecast to maintain the good rhythm of the campaign is based on receiving more than 40 million doses in the second quarter of the year, with a forecast of inoculating up to three million weekly sera, as the Chief Executive said weeks ago, Pedro Sanchez.
Among the unknowns, it is necessary to solve in a few weeks the administration of the second dose to the approximately two million people under the age of 60 who were vaccinated with AstraZeneca, a serum that has now been destined only for the population group over this age.
