Spain doubled imports of crude oil from Russia in February until the start of the war

Spain imported 200,000 tons of oil from Russia last February, until the war broke out in Ukraine, which represents an increase of 2.4% compared to the same month in 2021 and double the amount imported in January this year (100,000 tons). The accumulated figure for 2022 shows a drop of 39.6% compared to the same period in 2021.

When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the oil companies announced that they would stop bringing Russian crude into our country.

Those 200,000 tons represent 4.1% of all crude imported by our country in February, according to data from Cores. Crude oil imports to Spain in February increased by 19.4% year-on-year and stood at 4.9 million tons.

The annual accumulated presents a rise of 17.5%.

In February, 32 types of crude were imported from 16 countries. Nigeria (629,000 tons, 12.8% of the total) was the main supplier of crude oil to Spain in February, with an increase of 21.8% year-on-year. It is followed by Libya (562,000 tons, 11.5%), with a decrease of 9.7%, and the United States (540,000 tons, 11.0%), which increased its imports by 14.1%.

Deliveries from Algeria (+283.7%), Saudi Arabia (+142.3%) and Nigeria (+21.8%) have grown, while those from Libya and Iraq have decreased (9.7% and 6.7% respectively).
