Spain breaks a new daily record with 41,576 infections and adds 464 deaths

The Ministry of Health has registered 41,576 new cases of coronavirus in the last day. This is a record number since the start of the pandemic.

Regarding the deceased, the health authorities have added 464. In total, 1,146 have died in the last week.

In addition, the accumulated incidence continues to rise. Yesterday, it broke the barrier of 700 cases to reach 714. This Wednesday the figure is 736.22.

The figures come in a week in which Spain has notified the worst number of infections in a weekend of the entire pandemic: 82,487 new positives that accelerated the accumulated incidence scoreboard at breakneck speed. Although the most used variable is cumulative incidence, the devastating increase in infections is leading to equally worrying levels other epidemiological indicators: ICU occupancy stands at 33.7%, far from the 25% established as "extreme risk ". For its part, that of hospital beds is around 19.2%, less than one point from the maximum alert level.

In addition, the communities continue to impose restrictive measures to stop this wave: today, the Generalitat de Catalunya has announced the extension for another two weeks, until February 7, of current restrictions to stop coronavirus infections. They include the municipal perimeter confinement, with duly justified exceptions, as well as the closure of non-essential businesses on weekends, while on other days only establishments of less than 400 square meters may open.

The shopping centers will remain closed for another two weeks, the restaurant will continue with time slots to serve only during breakfasts - from 7:30 am. to 9:30 am - and meals - from 1:30 pm. at 3:30 pm -, culture will maintain capacity restrictions and sports activities and gymnasiums will only be authorized if they take place outdoors.
