Sonia Pulido, 2020 National Illustration Award

The Catalan illustrator Sonia Pulido has been awarded this Tuesday with the National Illustration Award for its “wide trajectory at national and international level and for its versatility, which covers almost all areas of illustration: graphic novels, editorial illustration and advertising. ”

This has been considered by the jury of this award corresponding to 2020, endowed with 20,000 euros, which has also highlighted the “personal style” of Pulido (Barcelona, ​​1973), which is “between power and fragility, with an aesthetic that not only draws on references from the past, but is totally contemporary. ”

The Ministry of Culture and Sports grants this award with the aim of recognizing and distinguishing all the work carried out by a Spanish illustrator or illustrator in the field of books and letters in any of the Spanish languages.

Pulido, graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, ​​won the Injuve illustration contest in 2002, and got her first collaboration in ‘El País Semanal’.

Since then, their collaborations in the main national newspapers and magazines such as ‘El País’, ‘El País Semanal’, ‘Harper’s Baazar Spain’, ‘Rockdelux’, ‘Marie Claire’, ‘La suitta de Portbou’ or ‘Jot Down’.

In the field of editorial illustration, the Catalan is the author of more than fifteen illustrated books, covers, advertising campaigns, and graphic novels published by Oxfam Intermon, Bentonville Film Festival, Random House Mondadory, Harper Collins, Editorial Lumen, Editorial Blackie Books, Editorial Alfaguara, Editorial Planeta, Editorial Anaya or Editorial SM.

In parallel also has had exhibitions in specialized galleries around the world (La Fiambrera Art Gallery, Association of Ceramicists of Catalonia, ABC Museum, Pop-up Space The Soho Gallery, Gallery As you see me you will see, Espacio Sins Entido, House of the Province of Seville …); He has also developed a ceramic line in which he explores the narrative and expressive possibilities of drawing.

In a three-dimensional support and of daily use, for some years, its presence in the most recognized and prestigious media of the international press (The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, AD France or The Boston Globe to name a few).

In addition, his work has been recognized in international competitions such as the Awars of Excellence Communications Arts magazine, Society of Illustrators, the Latin American Illustration, American Illustration, Junceda or the Young Illustrators Award.

The jury for this edition has been chaired by Maria Jose Galvez Salvador, general director of the Book and Promotion of Reading and Begoña Cerro Prada, deputy director of the Promotion of Spanish Books, Reading and Literature has acted as vice president.

It has also been formed by Carmen Marcos Vaca, by the Professional Association of Illustrators of Catalonia; Amparo Díez Alba (Ada Díez), by the Professional Association of Illustrators of Valencia; Ana Bustelo García, for the Professional Association of Illustrators of Madrid and Carlos Arrojo Naya, for the Galician Association of Illustration Professionals.

The jury is completed by Higinia Garay, by the Professional Association of Illustrators of the Basque Country; Santiago Vicente, for the Federation of Associations of Professional Illustrators (FADIP); Consuelo Gómez from the UNED Center for Gender Studies; Víctor Nieto from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando; Xosé Antonio Perozo for the Spanish Organization for Children’s Books (OEPLI); José María Pérez (Peridis) by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Francisco Javier Giménez, illustrator awarded in the 2019 call.
