The 33rd edition of the Goya will have a special color. For the first time, Seville will host the awards ceremony of Spanish cinema, in which part as favorite the comedy Champions, by Javier Fesser. It will be the next day 2 at the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of the capital (Fibes). "We go to Seville because the filmmakers go where we feel wanted. Seville turns to the productions and the institutional support is exemplary. The treatment, the respect and the consideration that they have towards the cinema in Spanish are an example that many Spanish cities could imitate ", indicates the president of the Film Academy, Mariano Barroso. The appointment will not only reinforce the position of the city within the sector, but also put the culmination of a season in which the seventh art has permeated the capital after the 15th edition of the Seville Festival and the delivery of the European Film Awards the last December. This is the second time that the Goya are celebrated outside Madrid after landing in Barcelona in the year 2000.
The city scenario of movies like Lawrence of Arabia Y Star Wars: Attack of the clones is preparing these days to become the epicenter of Spanish cinema with parallel activities that seek to go beyond the red carpet and take advantage of the pull of an appointment that, according to the data of the City, will leave an economic impact of five million euros. "The cinema is becoming a fundamental ally of the promotion of Seville, to enhance our brand outside the city," says the delegate of Culture, Antonio Muñoz, who emphasizes the work that the Consistory has been developing to make the culture, in general; and cinema, in particular; the hallmark of the city. "With the cinema we have stepped on the accelerator," he adds. This commitment to culture has also materialized in recent months to host events such as the Max Awards, Ondas or Forqué.
The unanimous election of Seville as a stage for the Goya it reinforces its position in the sector and supports its production. "The strength and talent of the Andalusian cinema in recent years are indisputable and a source of pride for all filmmakers. Screenwriters, directors, actors and technicians of all specialties make it a reference, "says Barroso. "That they celebrate here is also a clear recognition of the cinema that is being made in Seville and throughout the community," adds Muñoz. In this edition, the Andalusian productions, directors and performers add up to twenty nominations, including the Andalusian co-production Who will sing to you (seven nominations), the film by Sevillian director Celia Rico, Trip to a mother's room (four); or the double of the Malaga actor Antonio de la Torre.
The city breathes cinema since last November and will continue to do so until day 2. The last edition of the Seville Festival It attracted more than 780 professionals from the sector to the capital and beat its own record with more than 76,000 spectators. "It was 90% of the directors who showed a film in the different sections," recalls the director of the meeting, José Luis Cienfuegos. The European Film Awards were accompanied the previous days of master class, meetings between the nominees and professionals of the sector, open debates … The gala was attended by more than 1,500 attendees, including 650 European professionals. "The objective is not only to take advantage of the great promotion and media impact generated by these events, but also to promote synergies and for our industry to generate muscle," says Muñoz. The City Council estimates that the Goya will suppose an advertising value of 50 million euros. "It is no coincidence that Seville hosts the Goya or the EFA. It responds to a sum of factors such as political will, historical link with the cinema, we are a great film set and the birthplace of great directors, actors, actresses …; his ability to organize events, as he demonstrated at Expo 92; and knowing how to value and appreciate those who visit us, "says the delegate. "It's a preliminary work, a city job, a clear commitment to the cinema, a discipline that is at a delicate moment in which the viewer has to decide if he wants an individual or collective experience," says Cienfuegos.
With the aim of taking advantage of the most important event of the Spanish cultural industry, which will occupy the 3,200 seats of the auditorium, Seville extends the red carpet from Monday 28 with a series of parallel activities and dyeing the Torre del Oro red and points like the shoe of Betis street and the wall of the Macarena. It will hold meetings with actors and filmmakers, will screen the nominees for best film (the one of Champions in the Seville I) prison, will host a debate among Ibero-American film professionals … "Events of this kind are also an opportunity to publicize the Andalusian technical and artistic talent. They are an opportunity to continue selling us as a film set with the visit to the stages of Game of Thrones, Solo… In fact, we have already closed different trips with academics ", says the director of the Andalusia Film Commission, Piluca Querol. According to the data of the Consistory, the filming in Seville amounted to 131 in 2017, with a direct investment of 11.6 million euros. Of these, 4.3 million came from feature films.
