Since when did the United States not fall in a quarterfinals?

The debacle of the United States in the World Cup of China with the defeat (79-89) against France in the quarterfinals refers to the darkest era of the USA Team. For 17 years, since its Indianapolis World Cup, the American team did not lose the fight for medals in World Cups or Olympic Games.

That World Cup edition that was played in one of the cradles of American basketball ended with the host team away from the medals thanks to a country that no longer exists. Yugoslavia was charged to the United States in quarters (81-78) and days later was proclaimed world champion. It was not the only defeat of the Americans in that tournament. Before Argentina had already passed them. It was the first defeat of a Yankee team formed by NBA players since the Dream Team marveled the planet in Barcelona'92. The third defeat in that championship for the United States came from the hand of Spain in the fight for fifth place.

That humiliation was prolonged with the bronze achieved two years later in Athens and a new bronze in the 2006 World Cup in Japan where Spain was proclaimed champion. The US Federation decided that this would not be repeated and for the following competitions recruited the great stars of the NBA. Three Olympic golds arrived (in Beijing and London against Spain and in Rio before Serbia) and two world golds (2010 against Turkey and 2014 against Serbia). The casualties in the current edition of the tournament have weighed down Gregg Popovich's team and France has done the rest.
