The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPC) maintains six of its areas among the most outstanding in the world according to the prestigious international ranking of universities, ARWU Ranking Shanghai 2021, the same areas that were already highlighted in the 2020 ranking. These are Tourism, 1st in Spain and 31st in the world; followed by Oceanography, 4th in Spain and 101-150 in the world; Veterinary, 9th in Spain and 151-200 in the world; Economy, 11th in Spain and 401-500 in the world; Public Health, 14th in Spain and 401-500 in the world; and Human Biology, 14th in Spain and 401-500 in the world.
The Tourism area of the ULPGC repeats itself as the first in Spain and is in position 31 in the world. In addition, two other areas improve their position within Spain: in the case of Oceanography, it goes from position 5 in 2020 to position 4 in 2021; and Economy also climbs one position, from 12 to 11, from 2020 to 2021.
The Shanghai Ranking or Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) classifies 1,200 universities each year and publishes the best results in each area, using objective indicators regarding published research articles, such as the total number, the citation ratio, the number of the articles that have had an international collaboration, those published in magazines of excellence and the most outstanding awards received.
The area of tourism of the ULPGC occupies the world position 31, being the first in Spain in this ranking that evaluates 300 international universities. The ULPGC repeats the first position in Spain since 2018. This area is headed by the University of Hong Kong and together with the ULPGC there are only 19 Spanish universities.
The area of Ocenography of the ULPGC, 4th in Spain, is in the range of 101 to 150 out of 200 universities, led by the University of Washington, improves its position with respect to 2020 in Spain and has improved at the world level also since 2018 when it was among the 151-200 of the world’s universities.
The area of vet it ranks 151-200 out of a total of 300 world universities, led by the Belgian University of Ghent. The ULPGC is the ninth Spanish university in this ranking, where only a total of 13 universities in Spain are included.
The area of Economy analyzes 500 universities, led by the University of Chicago, and the ULPGC is included in this edition in position 401-500, ranking 11th out of a total of 15 Spanish universities included.
The area of Health It includes the best 500 universities in the world led by the North American Harvard and the ULPGC is situated in the range 401-500, where there are only 18 Spanish universities.
The area of Human Biology, evaluates the best 500 universities in the world, led by the North American University of Harvard. It includes 19 Spanish universities, of which the ULPGC occupies the 14th national position and 401-500 in the world and repeats this year in the ranking where it was included for the first time in 2020.
