Seven keys to successfully confinement

Staying at home for so many days can create a lot of psychological discomfort. We help you overcome it

The Council of Ministers agreed yesterday the isolation of the population for a minimum period of 15 days, which may be extended with the approval of the Congress of Deputies. Citizens will only be able to leave home in exceptional situations such as buying food or pharmaceutical products or moving to and from work.

The situation of confinement at home for several days can generate a lot of psychological discomfort, that is why we give you seven guidelines prepared by the partner educator and psychologist, Elena San Martín Suárez, that will help you cope with it:

  1. AVOID OVERINFORMATION: The overinformation that can generate a lot of anxiety. To take care of ourselves, we will avoid being on TV all day listening to news about the coronavirus. We will only inform ourselves at a specific time of the day that we have previously chosen. They can be the news in the morning, in the afternoon or at night, whatever we want, but only once a day. The rest of the day we will be busy doing activities that are not related to this topic.
  2. POSITIVE COPING: We must focus cognitively not on not being let out, but on how, thanks to our personal sacrifice, we are doing good for others and for society. That we are doing something that is essential to the common good. Focusing on the fact that, although it is difficult, staying at home is saving lives.
  3. TECHNOLOGY: Using technology to keep us close to our loved ones
  4. KEEP ACTIVE: Limit the time we spend connected to technology. Find manual activities and ways to spend time separate from the screens. Find ways of physical activity that we can do at home.
  5. ROUTINE: Plan a daily routine that we design ourselves previously and stick to it
  6. MUTUAL HELP: Get together and become aware of the difficulties these days can pose on a psychological level. Make a “peace agreement”, through which, we will collaborate and support each other, striving to make life more bearable for others during this time.
  7. SPECIAL ADVICE FOR CHILDREN: Maintaining a schedule and routine is essential. For example: in the morning we do our homework, after lunch we watch TV or we play with technology and in the afternoon we take advantage of the situation to do special family activities. Children they must understand why we should not leave the house: not because of the fear of getting it, but because in this way we are protecting people in fragile health. Make them understand that we are doing an act full of value and transcendent meaning.
