The General Directorate of Public Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has denied the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria the permits for the celebration of the ‘Womad-Bubble’ that was going to be held from 19 to 22 November. The SCS does not authorize the celebration due to the situation of the Covid in the Islands and the risk that the celebration of the event implies for the spread of the virus.

As you advance Canary Time, the technical committee and the General Directorate of Public Health consider that current circumstances do not allow the holding of a mass event. The organization’s efforts to hold the festival in a safe space have not borne fruit.

The organization of the Festival formed by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Government of the Canary Islands, WOMAD International, DD & Company Producciones y Promoción de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture of the Government from Spain, worked to offer the ‘Festival WOMAD’ Bubble ‘, transforming the location into an innovative Covid safe space with three bubble stages and concerts by around thirty performers from all over Spain and the Canary Islands, as well as international artists.

Although the island of Gran Canaria It is at a “green traffic light”, the accumulated incidence of recent dates and the risk of spread have prevented the celebration of the mythical festival.
