San Roque University Hospitals, technological innovation at the service of health

Hospital Universitarios San Roque is an example of innovation and avant-garde in the field of technology applied to healthcare management. There are multiple health fields in which the private entity has been a pioneer and has led the introduction of new techniques, solutions and advances in comprehensive patient care, from diagnosis to disease treatment.

From the area of Oncology to Gynecology, through the prevention and care of the pandemic of COVID19, Hospital Universitarios San Roque develops a strategic technological plan, which allows offering a differentiated health care.

One of the examples of this innovation was recently launched with the launch of the new Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of Hospital Universitarios San Roque in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which it has developed and already has an APP that allows it to keep updated on real time all the information on the development of the pregnancy. This application allows you to forget about paper and conventional media by digitally monitoring the pregnancy.

Also in the field of technology and R&D applied to improving the quality of patient care, Hospital Universitarios San Roque in Maspalomas participates in a project, together with the Institute for Research and Innovation in Bioengineering of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and with the Canarian company ‘The Wise Dreams’, to develop solutions that mitigate the feeling of loneliness of the elderly population using voice assistants and virtual reality.

Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and Neuroscience go hand in hand in this project that seeks innovative formulas to improve and humanize the care and quality of life of elderly or isolated people, and which will take place over 30 months. The objective is to design a sensorization and intelligence system, with a cognitive assistant and virtual reality application, to provide patient care.

For its execution, Hospital Universitarios San Roque in Maspalomas contributes its know-how, its technical-sanitary and administrative knowledge, essential for the success of this new project.

State of the art surgery

In the field of surgery, there are two novelties that place University Hospitals at the forefront of healthcare innovation. On the one hand, in the area of Neurology – Movement Disorders Unit, it has successfully developed the first Parkinson’s surgery of private healthcare in the Islands in the application of cerebral electrical neurostimulation (‘Deep brain stimulation’ known as DBS for its acronym in English) is a treatment that, in advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease, provides important benefits in the quality of life from the patients.

On the other hand, in the field of Pediatric Urology, Hospital Universitarios San Roque in Maspalomas has been a pioneer in performing the first intervention in a child under 14 months, an orchidopexy surgery to lower the testicle from the abdomen to the scrotal bag, with innumerable advantages and new minimally invasive perspectives.

Diagnostics with nuclear technology

In the field of diagnostic technology and Nuclear medicine, Hospital Universitarios San Roque has a new ganmacamera in which SPECT (Simple Photon Emission Tomography) techniques are combined with CT (Computerized Axial Tomography). The new 16-slice SPECT-CT equipment is a great improvement in the diagnosis and monitoring of various pathologies. With the fusion of both images, a global improvement is achieved not only in the exact location of the lesions, but also in a correct diagnosis of them. A faster, more precise equipment with less radiation.

Facing COVID19

With regard to the fight against the COVID19 pandemic, Hospital Universitarios San Roque has implemented the MoonBeam 3 disinfection system, which involves scrupulous disinfection to reduce environmental pathogens, minimizing the risk of infections. UV-C is an effective technology to reduce contamination and the potential for infection by using short wavelength ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms. The light waves emitted by these devices must be focused on those surfaces most likely to be contaminated or frequently touched. Of course, this disinfection is carried out by qualified personnel and as a complement to the usual cleaning.

In detecting the disease, Hospital Universitarios San Roque was a pioneer in the incorporation in the Canary Islands of the Antigen Test, from the Abbott company, which is certified by the European Commission for its device “Panbio COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device”. The main advantage of these tests is that they detect a virus protein at the current moment, providing essential information in the phase in which people are most at risk of spreading the disease. LResults are obtained in just 15 minutes, allowing a quick and effective analysis of population groups.

In addition, Hospital Universitarios San Roque, was the first private health entity in the Canary Islands certified by AENOR against the risks of COVID19. Hospitals, peripheral and diagnostic centers passed the audit of the highest authority for the control protocols of COVID19, thus guaranteeing the protection of patients, workers and the general public.
