Rubiales: "I hope that Luis Subies can prove his innocence" - La Provincia

The president of the Real spanish soccer federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, has reaffirmed the commitment of his body to justice after the "complex situation" produced after the arrest of the current vice president of the entity, Andreu Subies, which he hopes he can prove his "innocence".

This has been expressed this Tuesday in Santander, to questions from journalists after the Central Operation Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard has arrested, in the framework of a separate piece of the 'Soule case', his 'number two' and, also, former president of the Catalan Federation.

Rubiales, who had recently heard about the news and in a "quite sudden" way, has admitted that It is not a "pleasant" situation, but a "complicated" and "complex" one.

But he has advocated being "respectful" and "very rigorous" with this matter, and has taken the opportunity to underline the agency's "transparency" policy that presides and the commitment of "collaboration" with the open investigation, with the last aim of which the facts can be clarified with "the greater speed", because a situation thus, of "uncertainty, is not good".

In any case, the head of the RFEF, a training lawyer, has defended the principle of presumption of innocence and trusts that Subies can "prove" that it is.

After stressing that "transparency" and "rigor" are some of the "values" of the Federation and highlight the "respect" and "collaboration" with justice, Rubiales has explained to journalists that he has known the arrest of the vice president before to meet with the president of Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla, meeting planned within the two-day visit that is being made to this Autonomous Community and which has begun around 12.30.

To questions from the media about whether he knew that Subies was being investigated, he denied that point, and pointed out that "the only thing" he knew was the existence of the investigation that had begun in Catalonia.

In fact, the arrests have been made this Tuesday in Barcelona, where the agents of the UCO have registered the headquarters of the Catalan Football Federation within the investigation known as 'Caso Soule' which instructs the Central Court of Instruction number 1. Judge Santiago Pedraz ordered in July 2017 the arrest of Ángel María Villar, who was for 30 years maximum leader of the RFEF, as well as his son Gorka and other directors of the organization.

The Anti-corruption Prosecutor imputes Subies and José Contreras Arjona, ex-director of the same Catalan entity and who has also been arrested on Tuesday by the UCO, the crimes of appropriation, unfair administration and corruption among individuals. Both will go to court this Wednesday.

Luis Rubiales has assured to finalize that, in spite of the news, "morally" is "more committed than ever", and has recalled in this respect "fundamental" changes carried out under his mandate in the RFEF, among which he has cited the code of good governance or the creation of oversight bodies. "We have come a long way," he concluded.
