Robotic surgery reaches the Canarian private healthcare thanks to Quirónsalud


The Quirónsalud Hospital Group incorporates the Da Vinci surgical platform into its healthcare infrastructure, which, by providing greater precision and safety, represents an important advance in the surgical treatment of oncological diseases

Safety in the operating room and the precision of the surgeon are key both in the success of the surgery and in the best and fastest recovery of the patients. With the spirit of continuous improvement and of providing the best therapeutic option to all its patients, the Quirónsalud Hospital Group has launched the first Advanced Robotic Surgery Unit for private healthcare in the Islands.

In this way, the Hospital Quirónsalud Tenerife makes the most sophisticated minimally invasive surgical technique currently available to all Canarians by incorporating the Da Vinci surgical platform into its healthcare infrastructure, especially indicated for surgeries with a high level of complexity and Hard access.

Coordinated by Dr. Guillermo Conde, head of the Quirónsalud Urology Service in the Islands, this unit is multidisciplinary in nature and surgeons from different specialties will participate; It was also born with the aim of positioning Quirónsalud as a reference surgical center in the Archipelago.

In this way, Quirónsalud Tenerife becomes, together with hospitals such as the Quirónsalud Madrid University, Quirónsalud Barcelona or Teknon Medical Center, the eighth hospital of this hospital group in Spain to have this technology, available so far in the Canary Islands only in the four large public hospitals of the Canary Islands Health Service.

This surgical platform is made up of three components that are located inside the operating room: a console, which is operated by the surgeon; a viewing tower, which processes the image facilitating a real, augmented 3D view of the surgical field; and a cart with four articulated arms that reproduce with maximum precision the movements of the hand, wrist and fingers of the specialist and which are the ones that are in direct contact with the patient.

Since the first operation with the Da Vinci robotic system was performed in 2009, more than 8.5 million operations have been performed worldwide. In 2020 alone, 1.2 million were counted. Its use is especially indicated for the following specialties: Urology, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Thoracic Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology.

Specifically, of the total number of surgeries performed with this technology, 59% are included in the field of
Urology. In this specialty, the introduction of the Da Vinci has meant
an important advance in the treatment of oncological diseases, such as prostate and kidney cancer; as well as in the surgical resolution of pelvic organ prolapse. Being a minimally invasive surgical technique, it provides excellent aesthetic results, adding the advantage of being highly effective in resolving oncological and reconstructive pathology with the best functional results. This technology also allows surgeons to approach regions with complex anatomy that are difficult to access with other techniques, improving surgical precision.

Gynecology, the use of this platform extends to the vast majority of surgical treatments, as its advantages become especially relevant when it is necessary to intervene in narrow spaces where multiple structures converge, as occurs in the female pelvis, where the uterus, ovaries, bladder and rectum. This surgical platform gives access to all these structures with delicacy and precision, reducing risks and improving the recovery process with less pain and much smaller scars. It is used both in the surgical treatment of cervical cancer and endometrial cancer, but also in benign gynecological surgery.

Da Vinci robotic surgery is also a highly recommended choice for surgery procedures.
General Surgery such as colorectal surgery, esophagogastric surgery and bariatric surgery for the treatment of obesity. By allowing a finer dissection of the tissue, there is a drastic reduction in abdominal and visceral trauma.
