Rivas-Vaciamadrid covers 'The origin of the world' in graffiti version 153 years later | Culture

The graffiti artist which signs with the name of Sam3 has denounced that the City of Rivas-Vaciamadrid has censored a work of his that was part of the Reversible project. It is a personal interpretation of the famous painting The origin of the world, in which Gustave Courbet painted in 1866 the female sex of a woman lying down. Sam3 reproduced last week the controversial work that hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris in a fence on the outskirts of Madrid, within the municipal project Reversible.

The graffiti artist himself explains in an email that his intervention lasted only "a few hours". "Apparently because the town hall received some complaint call and without further ado, and probably to prevent more calls, they hurried to cover it with black raffia, waiting to relocate it in another point of the municipality as sources of the town hall have assured me", says Sam3.

The City Council has indicated to this newspaper this afternoon that its purpose is to place the fence in another environment that it considers more appropriate. He acknowledges that he has received complaints about everything from those responsible for the school La Luna, located near the fence, in front of the graffiti. These complaints have caused the mural to be covered. The Consistory, now governed by Pedro del Cura, of Izquierda Unida-Equo-MásMadrid, asure that the transfer will occur this week.

The fence used "is located on a small promontory next to a pine forest and is partially isolated, formerly it was the fence that announced the imminent construction of a building," says the artist, who provides graphic documentation in his mail about his work and about the place. He is part of the 13 national and international artists invited to Rivas-Vaciamadrid to intervene on billboards, in a project curated by the Madrid Street Art association that won the public call for tenders.

The work, in the process of being hidden

The work, in the process of being hidden

Sam3 indicates that "from the distance you can see Courbet's canvas because of the form and the composition, but when you come closer to contemplate it more closely you only find an innocent landscape of ants, pines, blades, sand …". The City Council has also insisted that the current location of the fence prevents the viewer from participating in this artistic game, unable to access it at a short distance. "This piece is a tribute to Étant Donnés Marcel Duchamp, "he adds, is a tribute also to the earth, to the feminine, to fertility, to nature, it stands out.

Sam3 intends to reflect with this work on "the relativity of things and the subjective that can become what anyone can consider or not obscene." Precisely, Courbet's painting was hidden for decades because it was considered obscene and pornographic. Now it is one of the jewels in the crown of the Musée d'Orsay, one of the most important art galleries in the world.

The Rivas-Vaciamadrid project aims to "contribute to critical reflection on the influence of mass media and advertising in our lives, as well as to increase the contemporary artistic heritage and make it available freely and free for all citizens ", according to the presented project.

Sam3 is an urban artist of proven experience whose name jumped to the media especially as a result of his intervention an advertisement for the Osborne bull, in which he painted Picasso's Guernica on the road to Las Salinas de Santa Pola.
