The Spanish basketball team was entrusted to the Ricky Rubio’s magic (23 points) to beat the French 79-87 in the fourth preparation match for the Tokyo Olympics played this Saturday at the Accor Arena in Paris.
France, encouraged by their audience and by Thursday’s defeat in Malaga, got off to a strong start. Moustapha Fall and Nando De Colo took advantage of the disorder of Scariolo’s men in the first bars and achieved an early income of 9 points difference (17-18).
After the time-out requested by the Italian coach, Sergio ‘El Chacho’ Rodríguez and Sergio Llull entered the field and revolutionized the game. The effectiveness of the two bases reduced the difference in the score to 3 points at the end of the first set (20-23).
In the second, the dynamite of Ricky Rubio and the inspiration of Darío Brizuela turned the result in favor of the Spanish. Escariolo’s men notably improved their defensive balance, contained the French fang, Evan Fournier, and with a brilliant choral game they went to rest nine up (45-36).
Spain started the second half well. Brizuela followed his own, scored his third triple and Willy Hernán Gómez, imposing on the painting, it stretched the rent to 10 points.
Then came the French reaction. Two consecutive baskets by New York Nicks guard Frank Nikitina dismantled Spain’s safety distance and raised the temperature of the Accor Arena in Paris.
France felt the roar of its audience and increased aggressiveness. The brand new signing of Real Madrid, Guerschon Yabusele, destroyed the Spanish defensive system with a good inside game and a 3-point shot that turned the score around.
The Utah Jazz pivot, Rudy Gobert, took advantage of his imposing physique to exercise French dominance over the paint, but the entry of Llull and Sergio Rodríguez was again decisive and Spain closed the third period two points ahead in the light (59-57).
In the final room, with everything to be decided and the pot boiling, the Ricky Rubio show arrived. The Minnesota guard put the team on his back and, with 17 points in the last quarter, he was crowned MVP of the game.
France tried it with triples, made the most of the talent of its stars, Batum, Fournier, Gobert, none of them managed to keep up with Ricky who, with a smile, certified the victory of the Spanish team in the fourth preparation match for the Tokyo Olympics.
