The Government is backing down and will not limit the price of electricity to 180 euros per megawatt hour, but is now working on other options that will allow greater unanimity within the EU. The change in position comes just four days after the Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, announced it in a radio interview, assuring that she would defend this proposal jointly with the Portuguese Government at the European Council to be held this week, with the aim of avoiding the effect of rising electricity prices on businesses and families.

Now this formula, which had provoked the rejection both by different employers and industrial associations, is completely parked, probably due to the impossibility of reaching an agreement in the European framework.

The rectification happens precisely when President Pedro Sánchez is immersed in a tour of Europe to convince the partners of the need to reform the energy market. The Government trusts in a package of measures at the European level and for this reason Sánchez ruled out taking his own measures until the Council of Ministers on March 29.
