Ave trains added 21.3 million trips last year, 3.7% more than in 2017 and 1,093,000 new passengers, Renfe reported today. The provisional balance drawn up by Renfe at year-end confirms a growth in all its commercial services of 4%, up to 33.6 million passengers. In the calculation of all services, the demand to travel by train grew by 4% compared to 2017, with a recovery of 20 million trips in a single year to add 507 million, which has not happened since 2008.
Thus, mobility in Avant trains, which cover average distances in High Speed and are considered public services, had a demand of 8.68 million trips in 2018, 6% more than the previous year.
The High Speed service in 2018 served 38.5 million passengers, added the 21.33 million trips on the Ave, the 8.68 million on Avant and 8.5 million of the Long Distance by High Speed.
As for the Cercanías and the Media Distancia, the increase in the number of trips during the past year was 4.1% (18 million more), up to 474 million travelers.
The railway company highlights the growth in Madrid's Cercanías core -256 million passengers, 6% more- and in Rodalies de Barcelona, with 116 million trips per year, 2.4% more than in 2017.
