The board of directors of Renfe On Monday, it approved the tender for the purchase of 211 large-capacity trains destined for Large coaches of Cercanías, for an amount of 2,270.5 million euros. In total, the tender amounts to 2,726.6 million euros. This amount includes the acquisition of park pieces, the maintenance of part of the trains purchased for 15 years, as well as the tools and the initial warehouse necessary for such maintenance. The first level maintenance will be carried out through a mixed company with Renfe Fabricacion y Mantenimiento.
The objective of this operation is to renew the rolling stock park to maximize transport capacity in the large nuclei of highly saturated Cercanías at critical points, such as, for example, the Cercanías de Madrid, the Sol tunnel or the Recoletos tunnel. For this, trains of at least 900 seats will be acquired (in the case of 100 meters), which represents an increase of 20% in capacity over the current fleet of Civia trains.
Of the total of 211 trains, 176 will have a length of 100 meters (those of the first batch) and another 35 will reach 200 meters (those of the second batch). Both modalities have the option to grow in length if necessary.
The new Cercanías trains will have accessibility and comfort improvements for passengers, access for people with reduced mobility, areas for bicycles and children's carts, as well as public Wi-Fi.
The tender includes the option of acquiring up to 120 additional trains also in two lots (96 of 100 meters and 24 of 200) and their maintenance for a period coinciding with the trains acquired in firm.
