The presidents of Renfe and CAF, Isaías Táboas and Andrés Arizkorreta, respectively, signed today the purchase contract for 31 Metric Gauge and 6 Alpine trains for 258 million euros, which the Basque company will supply to the operator, and which includes maintenance part of the train fleet over a 15-year period.
This contract is part of the fleet renewal plan launched by Renfe in 2019, with the aim of guaranteeing the quality and improvement of Public Services (Cercanías and Media Distancia) in the coming years.
The acquisition of these trains makes it possible to meet the foreseeable needs of rejuvenation of the fleet, with the increase in reliability and reduction of incidents, the increase in energy efficiency, as well as the adaptation to the obligations of implementation of accessibility and the increase of safety in the rail system.
The 31 new trains for the Metric Gauge network (26 electric and 5 hybrid) will reduce the average age from the current 28 years to 15 at the end of the Public Service Obligation contract signed by Renfe with the State for the provision of these services .
Better adaptation to demand
These trains, which will be able to circulate at a maximum speed of 100 km / h, will have two cars and three cars to better adapt to demand, and must have an area for bicycles and a “last mile” system for batteries. among other issues. In addition, there will be 5 hybrid trains, which will make it possible to use the electrical voltage in those sections where there is a catenary, reducing emissions.
The contract includes as an option the supply of up to 6 more additional electric trains, and another hybrid train, for the Metric Gauge fleet, which provides Cercanías and Media Distancia services in Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Galicia, Castilla y León and Murcia .
The 6 Alpinos trains will be used to service the Madrid Cercanías C-9 line, which connects the town of Cercedilla with the Port of Cotos, in the Sierra de Guadarrama, and which reaches maximum slopes of 77 thousandths.
The contract also includes first-level maintenance for 15 years for 12 Metric Gauge trains and the 6 Alpinos. The maintenance service will be provided through a joint venture between CAF and Renfe Fabricación y Mantenimiento.
