Red Eléctrica predicts that Menorca's blackout will be prolonged

Red Eléctrica de España has mobilized "the necessary human and technical resources" to repair as soon as possible at least one of the two high-voltage lines damaged by the storm that has left Menorca without light, but warns that "the adverse circumstances could prolong the recovery work. "

In a statement, the company explains that shortly before 10 am the electricity supply has been cut, affecting the substations of Ciutadella and Es Mercadal, two of the four on the island.

"The lost demand has been 32 MW out of the total of 55 MW at the time of the disturbance," says Red Eléctrica, which details that the damage has been caused by a "cap de fibló" that has entered the island from the sea. in the west.

The storm has caused damage both to the towers and the laying in two lines: in the Dragonera-Mercadal (15.5 kilometers) have fallen two support and in the Dragonera-Ciutadella (35.7 kilometers) two supports and a driver.

The length of these lines, the rugged terrain and the closure of maritime transport by the storm makes it difficult to locate the damaged points and the start of repair work, although Red Eléctrica works to restore the infrastructure "in the shortest possible time".

The company highlights that it has spare parts, emergency towers and cables on the island and that its operators are on the ground completing the review to establish the work plan.

"With the restoration of one of the two affected lines, the service can be restored," said Red Eléctrica.
