The year 2021 was especially complicated for the Red Cross volunteers, who are still involved in alleviating the effects of covid, immigration and the La Palma volcano. This was stated in the presentation of
your annual report its president in the Canary Islands,
Antonio Ricoaccompanied by the representatives of the two provinces, Mayte Pociello and Isaac Díaz.

With regard to the migratory phenomenon, the NGO highlighted the difficulty of the interventions of its volunteers due to the danger of crossing the Canarian Route. Not to mention that the mortality of those who cross the Atlantic reaches figures of
between 5% and 8%pointed out that the survivors reach the coast with great physical deterioration.

The organization offers this first humanitarian assistance at the foot of the dock and is also in charge of managing some reception centers. Although the first is the hardest, they assure that they do not neglect the second either because they believe that it is just as important.

The Red Cross carried out almost 38,000 social inclusion interventions for 22,400 immigrants on the islands last year

However, Rico stressed that the Red Cross has the vision, above all, of giving them a
comprehensive care. "Your migratory project does not end in the Canary Islands but in continental Spain or Europe, and we have to be the facilitators for that project to culminate."

Last year, the Red Cross has carried out around
540,000 interventions with 104,320 different peopleof which 22,400 have been immigrants, 7 refugees, 50,778 people in situations of extreme vulnerability, 2,088 people with disabilities, 538 inmates, 219 minors in difficulty, 3,319 vulnerable women and 10,157 elderly people, among others.

However, they deny that there is currently a large number of immigrants living on the streets, as was observed during the State blockade of ports and airports. At that time, the blockage in the referrals also saturated the camps, generated a great climate of discomfort and conflict and many left the resources.

Now, says the NGO, those who find themselves in this situation
they don't make a big group and attention is paid to them within the social inclusion projects offered by the Red Cross in general to vulnerable people, not in the specific field of immigration.

"There are few on the street and most of them are because they have rejected this service," explains Rico. "Being out of resources generates a complex situation for the person and the environment, but we always work to reach out to them."
