Raúl de Tomás will miss the friendlies that the Spanish team will play on Saturday against Albania in Cornellà-El Prat and next Tuesday against Iceland in Riazor as part of the road map drawn up by Luis Enrique to prepare for the World Cup in Qatar. The Espanyol striker felt discomfort during the training session that La Roja completed this Thursday at the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas and will undergo tests that should determine the extent of the ailment he suffers.

His loss is a setback for Luis Enrique and comes at a bad time for Raúl de Tomás, who was very excited to put on the national jersey on the Espanyol field and continue making merits to gain a foothold in the Asturian coach's list for the Cup of the World that will be held in the Asian country between November 21 and December 18.

This was the second call-up with the Spanish team for the Madrid striker, for whom the loss of Ansu Fati opened the doors of La Roja last November, when he was recruited at the last minute to replace the young Barça winger, who fell from the list for the last two matches of the World Cup qualifying phase due to a muscle injury in the hamstring of his left leg. The Real Madrid youth squad, who had been playing for the national team for some time, took advantage of the moment to break into an increasingly consolidated bloc.

Starter by surprise at the Spyros Louis stadium in Athens, he played 57 minutes in the victory against Greece, where he left very good feelings accompanying Álvaro Morata and Pablo Sarabia in the trident that Luis Enrique had up front. A performance that served him to sneak back into the Gijon eleven for the 'final' against Sweden held three days later at the La Cartuja venue in Seville, which sealed La Roja's passport to Qatar without going through the dreaded playoffs. There he returned to comply with note before leaving his position in the 60th minute to Rodrigo Moreno, another of the cards that dance in the offensive deck of the coach.

Morata, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres will have a fixed place in Qatar except for setbacks in the form of injury, to which Ansu Fati and Mikel Oyarzabal should be added in case the physique allows it to the culé and the txuri-urdin. Pablo Sarabia and Yéremy Pino also have good cards. From there, there is room for bets and Raúl de Tomás hoped to continue making merits in this window to sneak into the chosen ones. A reference for Espanyol, he has scored 14 goals this season in the League, the same as the Brazilian Vinicius and the Turkish Enes Ünal and surpassed only by the Frenchman Karim Benzema. Luis Enrique, who is delighted with his performance, will have to call for a replacement or face the two friendlies against Albania and Iceland with 22 players.

second setback

Raúl de Tomás is the second footballer that Luis Enrique has dropped due to physical problems since the Asturian offered the call for 23 expeditionaries last Friday. The first setback was given by Diego Llorente, who was injured in the last Leeds game and opened a gap that was filled by the Valencian player Hugo Guillamón, initially called up for the U-21 team but who already made his debut as an absolute international in that friendly played against Lithuania before of the last European Championship in which the quarantine imposed after Sergio Busquets positive for coronavirus led to the jump of a bunch of members of La Rojita.
