President Rebelo de Sousa achieves re-election in Portugal, according to polls

The president of Portugal, the conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is the winner of the first round of the country’s presidential elections with between 57 and 62% of the votes, according to the exit polls of the public television network RTP.

In second place appears the socialist MEP Ana Gomes, with between 13 and 16% of votes, while the third place is for the far-right candidate, André Ventura, with between 8 and 12% of votes, according to with these projections.

If the estimates are confirmed, released with the closing of the polls in the Azores –opened one more hour due to the time difference–, Rebelo de Sousa would secure a new mandate without the need for a second round.
