Prejudices and falsehoods about the Pride and the LGTBI movement

The beginning of the annual Pride celebrations and the irruption of Vox in the political landscape have revived in the networks all kinds of prejudices and falsehoods about the LGTBI collective and the organization of this festive and protest march in the capital of Spain.

These are some of the preconceived ideas that circulate on Twitter and the rest of the networks on the occasion of the LGBTI Pride Madrid 2019:

It is false that the Ministry of Health has warned that HIV will shoot up in Madrid during the LGBTI Pride that takes place this Saturday, as it has spread on the networks following a headline of the Mediterranean Digital portal.

Health sources consulted by Efe deny that supposed alert and specify that what the ministry has done is to launch an awareness and prevention campaign against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which includes the donation of 60,000 kits with condoms plus lubricant for free distribution during the manifestation of the Pride.

In the framework of the campaign, the director of the Observatory of the National Health System, Julia del Amo, has broadcast on Twitter, on behalf of the National AIDS Plan, a welcome message – in Spanish and English – to the "million people from around the world "who have come to Madrid for the Pride, in which advises the use of condoms to prevent the transmission and transmission of STIs.

In a more detailed way, Health has also published a document of recommendations for those attending the Pride in which, under the heading "Information on the risks associated with participation in the event", informs that the latest data (of 2016) include 3,353 new cases of HIV in Spain (83.9% of them men) and reflect that the main mode of transmission (53.1%) was through homosexual contacts.

The messages disseminated in networks also attribute the alleged alert to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), an institution that has not prepared any specific document before Pride 2019 in Madrid, although it did in 2017.

On the occasion of the World Pride Madrid 2017, the ECDC disseminated an assessment of the risks of outbreaks and communicable diseases during the festival, in which it warned that, for sexually transmitted diseases, the risk had been classified as "moderate to high" "

All parties are free to join "on equal terms with the other entities" to a march that "symbolizes freedom and equal rights" of the LGTBI collective, explain sources from the State Federation of Lesbians, Gais, Trans and Bisexuals (Felgtb), co-organizer of the Pride.

It is "a political tool that responds to inequality and discrimination" suffered by the LGTBI collective, adds Felgtb about this emblematic celebration.

To the accusations of Vox, with affirmations like that the Pride supposes an "ideological imposition" to the service of "groups of pressure dedicated to face the society to gain power and to receive subsidies", has been added in this edition the controversy by the veto of the LGTB + Collective of Madrid (Cogam) to the participation of PP and Cs in the head and in a float.

Cogam, one of the founding entities of the Felgtb, excluded this year from the head of the two formations for not having signed the decalogue of measures defended by the Madrid collective, whose first point obliges "not to use the votes of the parties that they defend an ideology of the extreme right to govern ".

The Felgtb points out about this controversy: "As in any demonstration, all parties are free to join on foot," but "lead a march that shouts 'Not a step back' and symbolizes the freedom and equal rights of the collective while empowering Those who want to deprive us of the few rights we have achieved are incompatible things. "

The Pride "has to do with human rights, it empowers LGTBI people to claim their rights and the freedoms that are denied them, as well as the use of public space from which they are often excluded", stresses the organization, before add: "Having visibility is fundamental, because what is not named does not exist".

The federation works with public administrations, political parties, trade unions and social organizations to achieve the inclusion of measures aimed at equality, underlines in the Transparency section of its website.

It is scientifically proven that the family structure of the parents, their sexual orientation, does not condition at all the development and the psycho-emotional well-being of the sons or daughters, explains to psychologist Ana Gómez Arias, specialized in sexual diversity and adviser of the School Official of Psychologists of Madrid for that matter.

This expert recalls that this is confirmed by "a very large number" of research carried out since the 70s, at that time mainly in the US and promoted by the Association of Psychology and Psychiatry (APA), at a time when custody was denied to lesbian mothers for this prejudice.

In Spain, this type of studies began in 2002 -the same Gómez Arias collaborated with the first of them- and all of them agree in their conclusions: It is completely unfounded that the fact of having gay parents or lesbian mothers generate in their children some kind of psycho-emotional problem, affective-sexual orientation or identity or gender roles.

In the same sense that the numerous investigations on the matter have been pronounced the WHO and all the professional organizations of the specialty, among them the General Council of the Psychology of Spain, that made public a document the past June 28, on the occasion of the International LGBTI Pride Day, to support this group in the face of prejudice and discrimination.

"It is a universal issue, not ideological," says Gómez Arias, who argues that the only protection needed by children raised by people with sexual diversity is to defend them from the risk of discrimination or harassment they may suffer in their environment. blame for prejudice.

There is no scientific evidence linking homosexuality with pedophilia. Moreover, when there are statistical data on pedophilia, the highest percentages correspond to abuses committed by males against female minors.

There are several studies that prove that there is no relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia. In fact, it has been shown that the erotic attraction that heterosexuals and homosexuals feel towards minors is similar.

Thus, research published by The Journal of Sex Research on the erotic preferences of gender and age revealed that homosexual men do not feel a greater attraction to boys than heterosexual men to girls.

There is no scientific basis to say that gay or bisexual men are more likely than heterosexuals to abuse children, explains Gregory Herek, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis.

The psychologist Ana Gómez Arias stresses that the accusation of pedophilia has been "one of the most terrible prejudices" that the gay community has suffered throughout history and, although "it has already been overcome in Spanish society," there is still " teachers who do not dare to freely verbalize their sexual-affective orientation "for fear of being perceived as potential pedophiles.

"It is a discourse that has always been latent" and, sometimes, groups linked to certain ideologies make it emerge, when it is a fear that "does not have a single data" to back it up.

This was recently assured by Vox spokeswoman in the Assembly of Madrid, Rocío Monasterio.

"We Madrileños do not have to see parties in which the dignity of the person is denigrated and they are exhibited in unoriented ways and sexual acts are made explicit in the street, during the daytime", says the right-wing leader in an interview with The Contra TV.

However, the Government Delegation in the Community of Madrid has no record that any complaint related to explicit sexual practices during the Pride celebrations has been filed.

Having sex on the street is considered a minor offense when it attempts "against sexual freedom and indemnity" or is carried out through an "obscene exhibition, when it does not constitute a criminal offense", according to the Organic Law for the Protection of Citizen Security.

In addition, the Penal Code includes as an offense of exhibitionism the role of "acts of obscene display to minors or persons with disabilities in need of special protection", and is punishable by imprisonment from six months to one year or a fine of 12 to 24 months.
