The PP of the Canary Islands has shown its concern about the change in position of the Government of Spain regarding the situation in Western Sahara and has recalled that the islands are the Spanish region most sensitive to any conflict in the area due to its proximity and historical ties .
Faced with this situation, the Popular Party (PP) at the state level has requested the appearance of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, before the Plenary Session of Congress to explain the change in the position of the Spanish Executive on the Sahara, the popular formation has indicated Canary in a statement.
The PP of the Canary Islands warns that it will be "very attentive" to Sánchez's explanations, in the face of this fundamental issue for the islands and the rest of Spain, since the change of course is due to "a decision without consensus, taken unilaterally without having counted with the main opposition party.
For the Popular Party of the Canary Islands, there are many worrying aspects in the determination announced by the Alawite kingdom, and asks if, in this change of course, Sánchez has ignored the explicit mandate of the United Nations on Western Sahara, which has maintained the same position in the last 47 years.
On the other hand, the Canarian PP points out that the president of the Spanish Executive will have to urgently clarify in the Lower House whether Algeria's position in this situation is known, since it also has implications for energy policy, in which Spain It depends on this African country for its gas supply, especially at this time of crisis and upheaval as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
