Poverty affects 184 million Latin Americans, according to ECLAC

Poverty affects 184 million Latin Americans, of which 62 million, equivalent to 10.2% of the population, are in a situation of extreme poverty, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reported today.

In its report "Social Panorama of Latin America 2018", with data from December of the previous year, ECLAC said that the proportion of the poor (30.2%) remained stable in 2017, but that people in extreme poverty continued to increase, extending a trend observed since 2015 in this region with more than 620 million inhabitants.

The 10.2% of Latin Americans living in extreme poverty is the highest percentage registered since 2008, warned the UN agency.
