Political instability continues to take its toll on Catalan tourism

Political instability in Catalonia continues to take its toll on its tourism sector, with a fall in the results of most companies during the summer months compared to the same period in 2017, according to the Alliance for Tourism Excellence, Exceltur.

The community continues to suffer from drops in tourism results and not only in Barcelona, but also in its holiday destinations, as a result of the street riots and on the beaches caused by the war of yellow crosses, explained today the executive vice president of Exceltur, José Luis Zoreda, in a press conference.

In a scenario, where the tourist image in Catalonia is affected by political instability, which "sporadically is reflected in public demonstrations of international resonance in streets and beaches, the profitability of Catalan tourism companies has continued to decline in the third quarter, with special incidence in the city of Barcelona, "he added.

Specifically, 70.2% of Catalan tourist companies saw their results reduced in these summer months compared to 2017, with a decrease in revenues of 3.8% in the June-August period.

This drop has risen in Barcelona to 6.9% and has also extended to the most emblematic areas of the Catalan coast, such as the Costa Brava, with a decrease of 2.7%; the Costa Dorada, with a fall of 3.9%, and the Costa de El Garraf, with a decrease of 6.2%, influenced mainly by the contraction of the national demand.
