PISA Report: Big differences by Autonomous Communities – La Provincia

The results of PISA 2018 report published on Tuesday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), there are large differences between the results of students from northern Spain and those from the south of the country.

For example, Galicia leads the classification by communities in science with 510 points, a result higher than the OECD average, almost 100 points more than those obtained by the students of Ceuta, 415, which are similar to those of countries like Mexico or Colombia.

Spain as a whole worsens its results in the largest international examination of educational competences, which is held every three years. In mathematics, Spanish students earn 481 points, five less than in the previous 2015 report, and 483 points in science, ten less than three years ago. In both mathematics and science, the average of the OECD countries is 489 points.

By autonomous communities, Navarra achieves the best results in mathematics, 503 points (although it loses 15 compared to the 2015 report), almost one hundred points more than Ceuta, which closes the Spanish list with 411. Behind Navarra and exceeding the average of the OECD countries are Castilla y León (502 ), Cantabria and Euskadi (499), Galicia (498), Aragon and La Rioja (497), Asturias (491) and Catalonia (490).

The Community of Madrid, with 486 points, and the Balearic Islands (483), are slightly above the Spanish average in mathematics. Below are the communities of Castilla-La Mancha (479), Region of Murcia (474), Valencian Community (473), Extremadura (470), Andalusia (467), Canary Islands (460), Melilla (432) and Ceuta ( 411).

In the classification of sciences, Galicia unseats, with 510 points, Castilla y León, which gets 501 losing 18 compared to three years ago. In this competition, students from Asturias (496), Cantabria (495), Aragón (493) and Navarra (492) have better results than the OECD average. Those in Catalonia, with 489, get the same international average score.

Exceeding the Spanish average in science are the Community of Madrid, La Rioja and Euskadi (487), and Castilla-La Mancha (484), while below are the Balearic Islands (482), Region of Murcia (479), Valencian Community (478), Extremadura (473), Andalucia (471), Canary Islands (470), Melilla (439) and Ceuta (415).

In reading, the third of the competencies evaluated by the 2018 PISA Report, the Spanish results have not been published after detecting "anomalies" in "a significant percentage"of the tests carried out last year in institutes throughout the country.

In the reading fluency test there were students who solved 20 questions in less than 25 seconds, answering all with yes or no, something that happened in "a small number of centers in some areas of Spain," according to the OECD. The publication of the results of this test has been postponed without date while the causes of this "anomalous behavior" are investigated.
