Pharmaceuticals and veterinarians address strategies to promote the responsible use of antibiotics - La Provincia

Pharmacists and veterinarians address strategies to enhance the responsible use of antibiotics among health professionals and in the field of veterinary medicine. Following this line, professionals warn of the dangers of the inappropriate use of this type of medication. This is the central theme of the celebration of the I Conference on the prudent use of antibiotics, which welcomes this afternoon in the Official College of Physicians of Las Palmas, and they are organized by the Official College of Pharmacists From the capital.

"Each year 35,000 people die in Spain, as a result of the immunological resistance created by antibiotics," said Juan Ramón Santana, president of the Official College of Pharmacists of Las Palmas. According to the president, "in order to reduce the number of deaths, some action plans are being developed in the European Union that contribute to rationalize their use. These plans act both in the field of human and animal health, to prevent possible resistance that can create humans through the food chain.

Among the dangers of the inappropriate use of antibiotics, and more specifically those of a broad spectrum, Santana highlighted the possibility of exhausting the most novel therapeutic alternatives. "The drugs would lose their effect, and we would not have the arsenal to treat some pathologies, which would contribute to an increase in the mortality rate," he said. And he adds that, "we must bear in mind that since a few years ago new antibiotics are not being generated by the industries".

The celebration of this Conference, which began at 4:00 pm and will conclude at 7:30 pm, will have the participation of various professionals from the health, veterinary and pharmaceutical fields. The meeting includes different presentations and offers the possibility of exchanging experiences among professionals, as well as the creation of a discussion table that allows to value the strategies that can be carried out to address this health problem.
