Arriola began working with José María Aznar in 1989 and later continued with Mariano Rajoy. Both former presidents used to go to him to outline his party strategies, gather his electoral analyzes before the election, and prepare some of his major campaign speeches and debates.

The one who was the main electoral 'guru' of the PP, husband of the former minister Celia Villalobos, who is part of the critical sector with the current leadership of the party, worked under the orders of Genoa 13 until the arrival of Pablo Casado to the Presidency of the organization.

The most right-wing sector of the party always attributed to Arriola that the message of the popular approach the center and abandon the more conservative and liberal "essences" and "principles" that Casado now claims to defend with the turn to the right that he undertook after becoming president of the Popular Party. In fact, the current leader of the PP got rid of the services of the sociologist par excellence of his predecessor as soon as he took command of the party.

With the victory in the primaries of the current leader of the PP, the Arriola-Villalobos tandem lost influence, until it completely disassociated itself from what was its political house for decades.
