Palma holds a round table on freedom of information on Tuesday

The Union of Journalists of the Balearic Islands (SPIB) will hold a round table on "Freedom of information in democracy: the role of journalists" on Tuesday at the Can Oleo building in Palma.
The SPIB has reported the celebration at 7.30 pm of this public debate on the social function of journalism and its defense before the public and private powers, after the seizure of mobile phones and computers to journalists of the newspaper of Mallorca and Europa Press in order of the investigating judge of the Cursach case.
In the debate, organized in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), the deputy director of Diario de Mallorca, Marisa Goñi; the president of the Association of Journalists of the Balearic Islands, Ángeles Durán; Professor of Constitutional Law of the UIB María Ballester; and the professor of Moral and Political Philosophy of the UIB Bernat Riutort.
The talk will be moderated by the general secretary of the Union of Journalists of the Balearic Islands, Maria Amengual.
The objective is to analyze the normative framework of journalists' work, their obligations, duties and the principles that guarantee the constitutional protection of professional secrecy and freedom of information.
According to the SPIB, the "attack" against the right to professional secrecy lived by these two media should lead to reflection on the role of journalism in democracy, both to professionals and to citizens in general, which is the "ultimate owner of the right to free information that justifies journalistic work.
