The culture in Spain is a diverse and continuously expanding panorama that in 2017 contributed 3.3% of GDP and 3.7% of total employment, according to the figures published this Friday by the Ministry of Culture in its Yearbook of cultural statistics. When going down to the detail of each section, figures that may surprise appear. We have compiled the most interesting of this study that is based on the National Statistical Plan and that collects data for the most part of 2017.

Who finances culture in the public sphere?

The average expenditure per household linked to culture was 718.3 euros in 2017

In 2016 the expenditure was led by local administrations (3,083 million, 0.28% of GDP), followed by regional governments (1,054 and 0.09%) and the central government (662 million, 0.06%).

How much do Spaniards spend on cultural consumption?

In 2017, household spending on cultural goods and services amounted to 13,298.4 million euros, representing 2.5% of the total estimated expenditure on goods and services. The average expenditure per household linked to culture was 718.3 euros and the average expenditure per person stood at 288.6 euros. The most significant components of the cultural expenditure analyzed are: mobile services and Internet-related services (25%); books (14.7%) and shows (cinemas, theaters and others) (12.6%).

Almost 13% of the trips related to leisure of residents in Spain in 2017 were made for cultural reasons. There are 12.5 million trips. If you look at tourists arriving from abroad, the percentage reaches 18% of trips. The total cost is 6,747 million for travelers residing in Spain and 13,923 million for tourists.

Cultural habits Who goes where?

The figures of the ministry indicate that listening to music, reading and going to the cinema are, without a doubt, the cultural activities carried out most frequently by the Spanish population. Cinema continues to be the cultural spectacle preferred by Spaniards, with annual attendance rates of 54%, and each year 43.5% of the population attends live shows. Of note among them are current music concerts, with rates of 24.5% and theater attendance, with 23.2%. It should be noted that these data are from September 2015.

How many people go to museums?

Most of the institutions investigated by the data of the Survey of Active Population are of public ownership (70.8%); 27% are privately owned and mixed 2.2%. The 1,521 museums investigated received 59.9 million visitors throughout 2016, a figure that represents an increase of 2.6% compared to 2014. The average number of visits per open museum reached 40,452.

How many libraries are there in Spain?

According to the Library Statistics prepared by the INE, the number of libraries rose in 2016 to 6,636, a figure that represents an average of 14.3 libraries per 100,000 inhabitants. Each of them has on average 1.3 service points. The number of users is 22.3 million (80% of them, adults) and the number of visitors to libraries in 2016 is 197.1 million.

What books are edited and by whom? In addition to the already known figure of the digital amount (three out of 10 books published in Spain) it should be noted that 91% of the books were published by private initiative and 88,000 of them were first editions and 1,843 reprints. Social sciences (30.4%), literary creation (24.2%) and science and technical books (14%) dominate the preferences of the editors.

Are there more or less moviegoers? How many foreign films do you see?

The total number of spectators in 2017 stood at 99.8 million, with a total collection of 591.3 million euros. These figures represent interannual decreases of 2% and 1.8% respectively. With regard to Spanish cinema, the audience amounted to 17.4 million and the collection to 103 million euros, while foreign films exhibited throughout 2017 obtained 82.5 million viewers and a collection of 488.3 millions of euros. How many concert halls and theatrical spaces are there in Spain?

The balance in this area is negative. As a whole, in 2017, the value of exports of culturally linked goods stood at 1,932.9 million euros, compared to imports of 2,319.5 million. In this context, highlights the good performance of the publishing sector, books and press, with exports of 610 million and a positive balance of 244.
