Nonagenarian Nuon Chea, the "number 2" brother of the Khmer Rouge regime convicted of genocide and other crimes in Cambodia, died today at a Nom Pen hospital where he was treated for several ailments, official sources reported.
"We can confirm that the defendant Nuon Chea, 93, died this afternoon on August 4, 2019 at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital," Neth Pheaktra, spokesman for the international tribunal that judges the crimes of the Khmer, said in a statement. Red.
Some 1.7 million people died due to purges, famines and abuse during the Maoist regime of the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979), led by the "number one" brother Pol Pot and Nuon Chea, considered the ideologue of the organization.
