Norwegian plans to lay off 1,191 employees, 85% of its workforce in Spain

The Norwegian company has communicated this Monday to the unions its intention to dismiss 1,191 workers in Spain, 85% of its total workforce, which would also imply the cessation of long-haul operations from Barcelona and a significant cut in short-range routes.

According to the USO union, Norwegian intends to render inoperative and without crews three of the five short-radius bases that it has in Spain, specifically Barcelona, Gran Canaria and Tenerife South. Norwegian would maintain its two operational bases in Malaga and Alicante, although with only one aircraft in each of them this year, USO points out.

USO and the pilots union Sepla have indicated that they “will face together” the negotiations to maintain the maximum number of jobs for crews based in Spain as well as their labor rights.
