The Ministry of Education is going to give a tour of Secondary. In its normative development of the Lomloe, the department directed by Pilar Alegría has sent a first proposal for the organization of teaching to the autonomous communities that includes changes in the structure of the courses and stages, especially in the Secondary stage, both in the compulsory (ESO) and post-compulsory (Baccalaureate).
In relation to ESO, the proposal, advanced by The country, adapts the stage to Lomloe, in which it ceases to have an applied and an academic path and therefore “forces to update the subjects, make them broad and multipurpose”: new subjects are created, such as Training and personal and professional orientation, they modify others, the compulsory ones are established for all the courses, the electives and the ones that the communities may place one year or another according to their convenience. Students will be more able to create their own Baccalaureate by choosing paths and subjects.
The Baccalaureate is perhaps the stage that will undergo the most changes in this regard. The current three options will become five with the Lomloe: Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, Arts (which in turn is divided into Music and Performing Arts and Plastic Arts, Image and Design) and a General Baccalaureate for whom not clear about the choice at 16 years.
The document enshrines the idea, already known since the writing of the law itself, that a student could finish his journey through compulsory education without receiving a purely Philosophy subject, which nevertheless does appear in the Baccalaureate for those who arrive: compulsory in 1st as Philosophy and compulsory in 2nd as History of Philosophy. The subject Education in Civic and Ethical Values, that the Philosophy faculty does not consider comparableIt does appear both in 5th and 6th grade of Primary and in ESO.
The new structure starts from next year in odd courses and the following year in pairs.
New subject in ESO
In ESO, students will have at least seven compulsory subjects per year (Biology and Geology and / or Physics and Chemistry, Physical Education, Geography and History, Spanish Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Mathematics) plus “at least” one per year between Plastic, Visual and Audiovisual Education and Music, which the communities will have to locate. Among the main novelties of this stage is that now Technology, which adds the surname “and Digitization”, will have to be compulsory in at least one year between 1st and 3rd of ESO.
It also appears at this stage, already in the fourth year and as a “subject of choice” to choose (until now it was not mandatory to offer it), the subject Training and Personal and Professional Orientation, which, the ministry explains, proposes an “approach to what human development from disciplines such as psychology, anthropology and sociology, which analyze and approach it from complementary perspectives. This subject contributes to knowing and training personal and social skills necessary to participate, create and develop in human groups, both in the personal, social and academic sphere with a vocational and professional projection towards the future “.
Two Bachelor of Arts
It is in the Baccalaureate where the greatest news is probably. The Lomloe changes the three types that existed with the Lomce in five possible ways, including a general one for those who are not yet clear about their vocation.
From this stage, which presents four subjects common to all the itineraries in its first year (Physical Education, Spanish Language and Literature and, if any, Co-official Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Philosophy), plus a mandatory characteristic of the chosen path and two other general electives plus those offered by the autonomous communities. In 2nd, the four compulsory ones are repeated (Spanish Language and Literature II, plus the corresponding co-official language where there is one, History of Spain, History of Philosophy and Foreign Language II), another compulsory of the branch and two to choose, plus the regional electives.
The General Baccalaureate, the intermediate path between the scientific and the artistic ones, is configured “incorporating in a balanced way scientific, humanistic, socioeconomic and artistic subjects (…), providing students with a comprehensive education, equipping them with the knowledge, the skills and attitudes that allow them to effectively access social life as committed citizens, to higher studies, both university and professional, that do not require a specific specialization “, according to the document sent by Education to the communities. The ministry specifies that “since the common subjects of the Baccalaureate have a more humanistic profile”, the compulsory subjects of this branch focus more on scientific training.
In the Science and Technology modality, the names of some subjects are modified (Biology and Geology adds “and Environmental Sciences” to its name; Geology does the same) and offers two types of Mathematics subjects: “Mathematics applied to CCSS II ( Social Sciences) offers an orientation in which the analysis and interpretation of data has more weight, which is adapted to students who intend to take degrees with subjects of Statistics and data science (health sciences); Mathematics II includes knowledge of Geometry, more suitable for technological or purely scientific orientation. Mathematics I in the first year provides a sufficient basis to take both subjects “, explains the document.
In Humanities and Social Sciences, students will be able to choose between Latin or Mathematics applied to the CCSS as they go through the Humanities or Social Sciences path, or they will be able to do both, one as compulsory and the other as optional.
