New energy efficiency labeling: what changes?

Approximately 85% of consumers who buy an appliance look at the Energy Efficiency Label (EEE) and take it into account for their final purchase decision, according to the data handled by the European Union (EU). Precisely the establishment of the EEA 25 years ago had this objective, as the right choice is not only reflected in energy savings at EU level – equivalent to Hungary’s one-year budget – but also significantly reduces consumer bills.

Specific, according to the Ecodes Foundation calculations, which encourages green development, a more efficient class of refrigerator means saving more than 400 euros in a decade compared to the one that is less so. And in the case of a washing machine, taking into account the water consumption, the savings could be in a decade of 500 euros.

Little current clarity

Precisely because of the importance of these savings in consumers’ pockets, the EU has designed a new label that clear up the confusion that occur in the current until now. Currently the EEE system has six categories ranging from A to F, from highest to lowest efficiency.

However, advances in innovation in this field forced the creation of three more categories within the category: A +, A ++ and A +++, to gradually incorporate the new savings systems. These subcategories have ended, in the opinion of the EU, by causing confusion, assimilating, for example, that an A + has the same efficiency as an A +++, since all belong to category A.

Consequently, many consumers, in search of short-term economic savingsSince efficiency raises the price of household appliances, they have settled for less efficient appliances, believing that being category A they had an optimal one, when in reality they are currently considered not very efficient.

The keys to the new labeling

To clear up this category confusion, the new EEA will remove the A +, A ++ and A +++ categories, and will extend the classification up to the letter G (A, B, C, D, E, F and G, from highest to lowest efficiency). In this way the current A ++ will become C in the new EEE and the current A +++ will be the new B.

As to the current B, will become D, the C will be the E, the D the F and the E the G. The letter A, for the moment, will be left for future devices that innovate in energy efficiency. On the other hand, although currently the new EEE has already entered into force for manufacturers, during the next few months the devices will have both labels, and it will not be until March 2021 when only the new EEE will be shown.

Another novelty is the inclusion of a QR code so that from our smartphone we can receive additional information about the appliance, such as the name of the manufacturer or supplier, the model with its number and its energy classification.

This will be the new label

The new EEE will contemplate the energy classification of the household appliance, but also additional data that can be very useful, such as the decibels of sound it produces, the capacity of the device, the resolution of its screen, its size, etc. At the moment this information will be limited to Refrigerators, televisions, washing machines and dishwashers.

  • Duration of the ‘Eco 40-60’ program (hours: minutes).
  • Weighted water consumption per cycle (liters).
  • Spin efficiency class.
  • The noise in decibels (from A to D).
