The Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza has won this Thursday the Czech Kristyna Pliskova (3-6 and 2-6) in second round of Roland Garros in a more peaceful day for her than the previous one, while Paula Badosa also advances and the male ‘army’ remains strong.
On a cold and wet Suzanne Lenglen court, Garbiñe Muguruza closed her match in one hour and eight minutes, and will face the American in the third round Danielle collins, which surpassed the Danish Clara Tauson in two comfortable sets (2-6 and 3-6).
Against Kristyna Pliskova, the Spanish and number eleven of the tournament imposed her backcourt game, she was good at the net and in her service and closed both sets well, although it was difficult for her to break the first serve to her rival. Yes, improved in her serve, was accurate when attacking (21 winning shots) and less erratic.
The first set began with a break in favor of Pliskova, which went from more to less. As soon as Garbiñe greased her legs and warmed up her wrist, the Spanish was far superior. She made a ‘break’ to the rival for 2-4 and had no more problems. In the second set, she broke for 2-3 and chained four games in a row to close the match.
Kristyna’s twin sister, number 2 in the tournament Karolina Pliskova, was eliminated in this second round against the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (6-4 and 6-2), in one of the surprises of the day in the women’s team. Yes, other seeds such as Petra Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka or Sofia Kenin passed.
For its part, the Spanish Paula Badosa remains firm, which eliminated American Sloane Stephens, the 29th seed of the tournament, in three sets (4-6, 6-4 and 2-6). The one from Begur (Girona), born in the United States, downed her rival being firm in her service and despite her bad percentage in the break points.
Badosa gets into a third round of a Grand Slam for the first time, and did so at the expense of a Stephens who was a finalist in Roland Garros in 2018. The Catalan continues to break barriers, after entering a Grand Slam main draw for the first time and entering the third round for now, where Jelena Ostapenko will be measured.
Carballés continues to sign in his best ‘Grand Slam’
In the men’s category, the number 1 in the world and first seed Novak Djokovic beat Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis on the fast track (6-1, 6-2 and 6-2), like Stefanos Tsitsipas, number 5 at this Roland Garros, beat Pablo Cuevas in three rounds (1-6, 4-6 and 2-6).
The surprise was given by the Spanish Roberto Carballés, who eliminated the ninth seed, the canadian Denis Shapovalov, in a great duel to the best of five sets (5-7, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-8). In the first round he did not give up a single set against the American Johnson (1-6, 1-6 and 0-6).
Carballés, current number 101 in the world, accesses a third round of the Grand Slam for the first time in his career, at a Roland Garros that is seeing its best version. Until this Thursday, his best Grand Slam performance was the second round at the US Open 2018, Roland Garros 2019 and US Open 2020.
Too still alive in the ‘armada’ Pablo Carreño, number 17 of the tournament, who beat Argentine Guido Pella (3-6, 2-6 and 1-6) in three rounds, going from low to high and advancing to a third round in which his compatriot will be measured Roberto Bautista or the Hungarian Attila Balázs.
