The Japanese Coast Guard reported on Saturday that at least 80 people were injured by the crash of the ship in which they were traveling with an object that could be a whale in the waters of the Sea of Japan.
The event occurred shortly after noon, local time (16.00 GMT), according to the ship's company,n ferry that had departed from the port of Niigata (northwest) to the island of Sado and with 121 passengers and four crew members on board.
Sources of the Coast Guard cited by local media pointed out that the wounded, thirteen of whom are serious although their lives are not in danger, have been transferred to a hospital center.
The public television network NHK has released statements by an expert who says that the magnitude of the impact suggests that the ship, which resumed its journey and reached its destination after the incident, collided with a whale.
In fact, the incident occurred in a zone that is part of the migratory route of the minke whales (minke whale) and humpback whales.
