The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has located since last midnight more than 70 earthquakes in La Palma, The highest magnitude being the one registered at 02:44 on Monday, reaching 3.6 in the municipality of Mazo., of intensity III-IV, and at a depth of 11 kilometers.

In this way, the ‘seismic swarm’ remains fully active south of Cumbre Vieja, where earthquakes are occurring at depths of between 10 and 20 kilometers mostly, reflecting high values.

The latest report by the technical director of the Pevolca of the Canary Islands Government, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, stated that after registering on Sunday afternoon an earthquake of magnitude 5, according to the IGN, can cause certain problems for which it has warned must “be prepared all ” the citizenship.

Specifically, it has added through a statement, that you should be away, when they occur, from the windows and if you are on the street, circulate through the central part to avoid falling cornices or any other element such as a lamppost, among other things.

On the other hand, in relation to air quality states that in the Aridane Valley, and in general in the entire north zone, in Tijarafe and Puntagorda, “it is reasonably good” except at Los Llanos de Aridane station, where the concentration of PM10 particles exceeds the set threshold.

For this reason, he has urged the citizens of these areas to use, in case of going out on the street, the FFP2 mask, particularly in Los Llanos de Aridane, they recommend avoiding exercise outdoors and being at home, mainly people who may meet with bronchial problems, asthma, heart disease, among others.

“These people should stay at home as a preventive measure. The rest of the public can go out perfectly with a FFP2 mask but restricting physical effort,” he added.

As for the municipalities of Tazacorte, El Paso, Tijarafe and Punta Gorda, which have been suffering from ashfall, has stated that the air quality “is reasonably good”. In any case, he pointed out that “the best” is to use the FFP2 mask when they go out “but without having self-protection problems, such as in Los Llanos de Aridane.”

The considerable volume of ash has covered the west and northwest sector of the island and has been accompanied by occasional explosions of great intensity.

Today suspended ash accumulation continues over the Aridane Valley, so special caution is requested on the road.

Trays have been set up in the different municipalities for the removal of ash.

Lava rise

It has been observed an increase in the rate of lava emission from the emitter focus, located on the northwest flank of the main cone. This very fluid supply of lava continues to feed the streams that run through the areas to the south-west, as well as the original stream, although to a lesser extent. The rest of the pouring areas are still being monitored, although no movements have been registered in recent hours, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DSN).

The pouring area below Cogote Mountain is the most active so far, reports the Cabildo of La Palma. Their progress is being closely monitored.

On the other hand, according to the latest data provided by the Copernicus program of the European Union (EU), there is 2,708 buildings affected.
