More than 400 firefighters fight a forest fire in the center of Portugal



More than 400 firefighters today fight a forest fire declared in the municipality of Tomar, in the center of Portugal, where 125 land-extinguishing vehicles and seven aerial means are also deployed.

According to Civil Protection information, the fire started at 16.11 local time (15.11 GMT) and due to the wind blowing in the area it has spread to the neighboring municipality of Abrantes.

In addition, one of the firefighters has been slightly injured during the work of extinction, and has been transferred to the Abrantes Hospital, the sources added.

There are 439 firefighters in the area, according to Civil Protection data, assisted by 125 land-extinguishing vehicles and seven aerial means.

The fire of Tomar is the only one of great dimensions that burns this Saturday in Portugal, where two other small fires are also active, one in Sabugal and another in Proença-a-Nova, both in the center of the country.

Civil Protection maintains until next Monday the yellow alert state in districts throughout Portugal due to fire risk, due to weather conditions, with low humidity and strong wind.

Portugal is one of the countries of the European Union where there are more forest fires every year, with an average of 20,000 annually between 2009 and 2018.
