More than 3,000 students enjoy the West Side Story show at the Cuys - La Provincia

More than 3,000 young people from around thirty schools discover the work and figure of composer Leonard Bernstein at the Teatro Cuyás thanks to the project West Side Story. Love without barriers sponsored by the Mapfre Foundation Guanarteme and La Obra Social-La Caixa within the framework of Teatrae, a pedagogical project of the aforementioned city center.

This initiative, which is part of a commemorative program of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and other entities of the Island on the occasion of the first centenary of the birth of the American musician and composer Leonard Bernstein -who was very linked to Gran Canaria-, consists of a series of six dramatized concerts by the Gran Canaria Big Band, directed in a format of camera by Sebastián Gil, and the actors-singers Marta Viera and Fasur Rodríguez, who will work under Mario Vega and Luis O'Malley, who also signs the theatrical text.

The proposal that the Cuyás will exhibit until tomorrow, in the morning, is not a version of that musical that premiered in 1957 nor of the film by Robert Wise, winner of 10 Oscars, but a show that combines music and theater, in which María's character invites reflection on the racial and identity conflicts that Bernstein's original work reflected.
