With
the arrival of 150 people this weekend to the islands, there are already more than
1,000 immigrants those who have passed through
Canary Route during the first
21 days of August. These figures suppose, between January 1 and August 15, a
25% increase compared to the same period in 2021.

Only in this month, at least six people who were traveling on the boats rescued by Salvamento Marítimo
passed away -including two minors-, while
another 18 died when shipwrecked off Tarfaya. Among the victims were seven women and a baby according to the data handled by the NGO Walking Borders.

These figures show, according to
parliamentary groups -both the opposition and the government-
the "failure" of the agreement reached between Pedro Sánchez and the Government of Rabat and that meant the turn of Spain in its position with respect to the Sahara. As Ricardo Fernández de la Puente (Cs) says "it has not served any good."

Luis Campos (NC)

"Pedro Sánchez's decision is a failure"

“Not even accepting the miserable rhetoric of changing the rights of the Saharawi people for benefits in immigration control has the president of Spain been right. His decision has been a failure », affirms the NC spokesman.

Manuel Dominguez (PP)

"Sánchez's lack of interest in the islands generates this situation"

The president of the popular Canarians points out that the situation experienced by immigration in the Canary Islands is understood by the "usual disinterest of Pedro Sánchez towards the archipelago", and describes Torres' silence as "incomprehensible".

Laura Fuentes (We Can)

“Establishing humanitarian corridors is a priority”

The leader of Podemos emphasizes that the migratory phenomena are not going to stop, which is why she considers it a priority for the institutions to establish humanitarian corridors that avoid added suffering for those who decide to migrate.

R. Fernández de la Puente (Mixed Group)

“The pact has not served for anything good”

The Cs deputy in the Mixed Group considers that Spain's agreement with Rabat has generated more problems than benefits. Regarding immigration, he indicates that "it continues without control and the measures adopted have not produced results."

For
New Canarythe increase in migratory flows is a
“Clear example of the little credibility” that Morocco has and of
"Failure of Sánchez's decision to legitimize a position contrary to international law and UN resolutions against the rights of the Saharawi people", indicated his
spokesperson, Luis Campos.

He recalled that among the benefits that had been discussed was
immigration control. "But even accepting that miserable rhetoric of exchanging rights for benefits, even in that the president of Spain was not right."

The immigration figures, he indicates, deny the arguments made by Sánchez himself and Minister José Manuel Albares «before the
shameful turn on the Saharawi people».

"Complete failure" according to the PP

He agrees with the assessment of the nationalist spokesman
the top leader of the PP. from the Canary Islands Manuel Dominguez maintains that
the policy of the Government of Spain in immigration is "a complete failure" that in the case of the islands is underpinned by "alarming data". And that, he adds, "that it was announced that with the unilateral change with respect to the Sahara the migratory phenomenon was going to be stopped."

Domínguez considers that the praises of the King of Morocco to Sánchez can only be understood "from the
government weakness, since it has not benefited our country at all, much less the Canary Islands”, an understanding, he says, of which the fine print is unknown. He also criticizes the
“thunderous silence” of the Canarian president.

legal avenues

For its part,
the general coordinator of Podemos, Laura Fuentesrefers to the deaths that have occurred with the migratory upturn this month that is framed, he says, in a context of strong international convulsions and in the
"swerve" of the PSOE regarding migration policy and the relationship with Morocco.

This turn "began with a
obviously absurd change on the Saharacontinued with the historical horror experienced in Melilla in June and continues with the death of people almost daily on the Canary coasts, ”says the leader of the purple formation.

In his opinion, this succession of humanitarian catastrophes should serve the PSOE to open its eyes and bet "at once" on the
establishment of legal avenues and safe that allow those fleeing difficult situations to reach Europe in a dignified way.

Hardening at the borders "is not only cruel, but it is useless". In this sense, he proposed
a priority to establish humanitarian corridors.

"Nothing good"

Also the deputy of
Citizens in the Mixed Group, Ricardo Fernández de la Puenteconsiders that the change in Spain's policy regarding the Sahara
“conditions have worsened”.

He emphasizes that Sánchez's unilateral gesture has caused the loss of relations with Algeria and for Morocco to get more benefits, but
not to stop immigration.

The turn on the Sahara and support for Morocco, skipping all United Nations resolutions
“it has not served any good”he concludes.
